Editorial Reviews

Except for the taping of a live performance at the Portland Festival, Miles Davis's discography for 1966 only lists the recordings made for the LP 'Miles Smiles'! How strange when one considers the usual large output of Miles and his ensembles for Columbia Records in the Sixties. The bass player Ron Carter was best suited for the complicated rhythm part and remained Miles's 'number one' in a quintet which gave a new interpretation to compositions by Wayne Shorter and jazz hits such as 'Freedom Jazz Dance' by Eddie Harris and Jimmy Heath's 'Gingerbread Boy'. Every second of the nine-minute-long 'Footprints' by Shorter is an absolute highlight, while the drumming of the young Tony Williams in 'Freedom Jazz Dance' is full of vitality, with a quick pulse, and even described as ¯threatening® in the liner notes. This music is neither 'new stream' nor 'old guard' but good modern jazz according to Anthony Tuttle. That's exactly what 'Miles Smiles' was upon its release 40 years ago - and that's what it is to this day! And that Miles Davis smiled for once thanks to the great musical relationship between the five individualists is certainly no mere rumour. . ' Recording: October 1966 at Columbia Records-Studios, New York, by Frank LaicoProduction: Teo Macero. ' 'Miles Smiles' - Miles Davis (tr); Wayne Shorter (ts); Herbie Hancock (p); Ron Carter (b); Tony Williams (dr). ' standard sleeve

Last night I listened to this CD for the first time on my new system, having owned the disk for five years. My God, Tony Williams is the shimmering potentiality from which all the music up-wells. Mesmerizing, exciting stuff...hate to use the over-used word...AWESOME. What a mind.

I am normally of the school that, like Lester Young once admonished a drummer, "Baby, don't drop no bombs on me," i.e., know your place, but Tony changes the whole game, it all comes from him, or he makes it sound that way. Thank you, Miles Davis, for being the genius that lets other geniuses evolve.

I "discovered" Tony Williams the day after Mulgrew Miller died, when in memorializing Miller a college station played a lot of Williams. I never heard of Miller, either. I was angry, since as a "jazz fan" listening to countless jazz shows over the course of forty years the music of these two musicians was barely highlighted, if at all.

Enjoy, my friends...get an articulate sound system and envelope yourself in this scintillating world, God bless us all. Thanks.
"Music...it's as serious as your life." Eric Dolphy

The new quintet bristling with new musical concepts. Miles was 'excited again' by his young new quintet. There is an undeniable newness to the sound no matter how often you've heard it, to this day. I don't know when the ' Miles mystique'' term got coined, but seems on full display in the recordings that make up Miles's 2nd great quintet. These recordings are my core favorites. (The live albums they recorded were phenomenal as well ie, 'Cookin at the Plugged Nickel' as well as overseas concerts.

Miles Smiles is, in a lot of ways, the last hurrah of superlative acoustic offerings by Davis; it was the end of an era, and right before Davis started experimenting with electronic sound. Recorded in 1966, it was right before the psychedelic period of that turbulent decade- a period of experimentation. Anyway, this album is absolutely in Miles' top ten of all-time. At times mezmerizing with its fast pace, and at other times deeply intellectual and slower, it has something for everyone in the realm of freebop. The track CIRCLE is piano-driven, and has a BLUE AND GREEN feel to it, (Kind of Blue Album), while definitely keeping its own identity. All in all, Miles Smiles is a cohesive effort that keeps the listeners attention. A must-have for any serious fan. 10/10

I recently purchased a DVD changer from Sony that can play Super Audio CDs (SACD). Intrigued I bought a few, including this one. The jazz is excellent, but this SACD is *NOT* multi-channel, one of the great features of some other SACDs I've purchased = it only plays in 2.1 stereo and therefore does not utilize rear surround channels. Compare this with the Pink Floyd Dark Side of the Moon or Herbie Hancock Head Hunters albums on SACD, both of which have separated tracks (eg; instruments, vocals on the former) which play across 5.1 channels which is a surreal, wonderful, SURROUND sound audio experience - as if different band members were sitting in different spots around you on a stage. If I had to repurchase, I would stick to the normal CD for this album. At least that way you can play it in any CD player and burn it, which you can't do with this SACD version.

All of the music made by this conglomeration of Jazz greats: Tony Williams, Ron Carter, Herbie Hancock, Wayne Shorter and the genius himself, Miles, is great. They are all artists at the apex of their instruments playing at the peak of Jazz. The performing artists' medium would not shortly be the same, after Miles and others would start to shake the foundations of Jazz with the introduction of electric instruments, and fusion would start a huge chasm in the genre. But before this happened these fellas explored the limits of Jazz, and Miles Smiles has some great examples of the Artists at Work. If you can listen to and appreciate this album you can really say that you know what the statement is about, this was perhaps the best quintet assembled in the 60's.

Miles' great quintet from the mid-1960s, including Wayne Shorter, Herbie Hancock, Ron Carter, and the incredible Tony Williams. Shorter's "Footprints" became a staple of concerts by the group and fully deserves to be considered a modern classic. Timeless progressive jazz.

Essential Miles, from his greatest period, with perhaps the greatest small jazz combo of all time (it's either this quintet or the classic Coltrane quartet - both succeeded in creating a separately identifiable reality - the pinnacle of artistic achievement).

The music is sublime and adventurous. Tony Williams at his very best, Ron Carter never lets anyone down and Herbie Hancock just lets rip!

Had a few speakers corner releases, they are great. So ordered this one from the curiosity. Got a a clean copy with one defect (tiny bubble) that dont effect the playing, so I am keeping it. No other pressing issues, scratches or scuffs. Sounds wonderful. A must have in collection.
