After a few days and many tweaks, I love this phone with some frustrations
EDIT (9/12/2016): Please read an addition to my review in the comments; I explain why I decided to drop my rating from 5 stars to 4 stars. I tried to edit my review here, but Amazon rejected my edits. I'm guessing the review was becoming too long...--I got into the Android world only recently with the Nexus 5X (I had only used iPhones before) and immediately grew to like it through the stock Android experience. I wasn't very pleased with the speed of the Nexus 5X and how sluggish many apps would run, but I didn't want to upgrade to the 6P (also made by Huawei) due to the larger size.Enter Huawei's Honor 8, which seems to be the perfect upgrade for me.THE POSITIVES:+The phone is very solidly built and put-together perfectly. It feels more expensive than it is+The design is slim and fits in your pocket easily. Unlike my Nexus 5X with the same screen size of 5.2", the Honor 8 fits perfectly in my car's cupholder+This phone runs fast! Everything seems immediate with practically no discernible lag, from web browsing to playing music (Apple Music, to be exact) to even unlocking using the fingerprint reader+Battery life is better than my Nexus 5X. The Nexus would last me 8-9 hours on a charge through the day, the Honor 8 seems to be going at least 12 hours and more before I need to plug it in+Speaking of charging, the fast charge feature is no joke. I've found the phone to go from almost empty (3%) to 100% fully charged in little more than an hour! The phone also charges fast with any regular 2.1A USB charger, such as the Anker Powerport. (The Nexus 5X will only rapid charge with its included charger)+Forgot to mention call-quality: the phone does support VoLTE calling, which is indicated by a "HD" icon. VoLTE calls sound so clear that it is hard to believe you are on a cell phone. Non-VoLTE (or non-HD) calls aren't as clear, but are still pretty good quality. Of course, it all depends on your network and reception (I'm on T-Mobile, and usually get their LTE or 4G HSPA network most of the time).+The Camera takes some great NIGHT shots. Try taking a picture of the Moon using the Honor 8 and an iPhone 6; the Honor 8 will render the Moon clearly, while it appears as a white blob in the iPhone's shot. For daytime pictures, I honestly couldn't tell much of a difference between an iPhone 6 vs Honor 8's shots of the same subjects. That is not to say the Honor 8 still takes impressive daylight pictures, but I'm not sure that the dual-lens function has much bearing on the quality of them. The camera app is super-fast and can be ready to take a shot in a couple seconds, unlike the Nexus who's camera app is very slow and not good for trying to catch quick one-of-a-kind moments.THE NEGATIVES:-Very simply, the software out of the box is so different from what I was used to with stock Android. I don't like many of the tweaks and visual flair that Huawei put into their version of Android (called EMUI). It is obvious they are trying to make their version of Android look and run very much like Apple's iOS.However, after much tweaking with the settings and installing some other applications, I've been able to make this phone feel a lot more like what I was used to. I've listed my tweaks below under "Tweaks to Consider"-As part of my tweaks, I tried to disable or at least hide many of Huawei's stock applications in favor of the Google apps. But one Huawei app in particular, HiVoice, keeps nagging me to give it permissions to access my content and what not. There is no way to disable that app and as much as I've tried to neuter it, I still get a random pop-up for it that annoys me. If any Huawei software engineers are reading this review, PLEASE give us the ability to disable or uninstall HiVoice. Or at the least, stop it from nagging constantly to gain permissions-The phone does heat up after several minutes of use. This is regardless of whether you are just browsing the web, listening to music or playing a game-Display and Resolution: On its own, the Honor 8's screen seems brilliant and renders text and images well. But compared side-to-side with the Nexus 5X, it seems to be pale in comparison. I've included pictures where I show the two devices side-by-side. I set both screens to display at 75% brightness; the Nexus screen (on the left) is obviously brighter than the Honor 8 (on the right). You will also notice that the Honor 8's screen doesn't display as much information or screen real estate as the Nexus does.NEUTRALS:+- Huawei will not win any awards for original design of the Honor 8. Just like the software, the phone itself is very much a copy of the iPhone 6/s, from the rounded edges to the glass screen to even the speaker holes. The back of the phone, however, isn't like the iPhone as it is glass. But then, I'd say Huawei was "inspired" by the iPhone 4/s or the Galaxy S7 for this aspect of the design+- Since the phone was just released, there aren't many cases or specifc accessories out yet. But I'm sure the selection will expand very soonTWEAKS TO CONSIDER:The biggest advantage of Android over iOS is the ability to tweak the software to your liking. If you are someone who is used to the stock Android experience from a Nexus phone, then consider the following tweaks I made to get the Honor 8 to a similar, if not the same, type of experience:-Launcher: (GOOGLE NOW LAUNCHER) I downloaded and installed the Google Now Launcher from the Play Store. This is the exact launcher that the stock Nexus devices use-Lock Screen: (MICROSOFT NEXT) I hated the fact that I couldn't get some notifications to disappear from my lock screen without having to unlock the device (in particular, I may want to keep a message from a friend visible to remind me to respond, but I want a spam email notification to go away). The solution I found was to download and install Microsoft's Next Lock Screen app from the Play Store. While it doesn't fully replicate the stock Android lock screen, it has pretty much the same functionality. In addition, you gain some useful quick shortcut icons on the bottom to open frequently-used apps. Most of all, you can keep the Next Lock Screen enabled and use the fingerprint-reader to still unlock the phone-Visual Voicemail: The Nexus supports Visual Voicemail within its Dialer app, but the Honor 8 doesn't. The only substitute is to download your carrier's own app for Visual Voicemail (I have T-Mobile and their app works almost seamlessly. AT&T also has an app in the Play Store)-Remove Bloatware: Huawei does ship the Honor 8 with a few bloatware apps, such as Booking.com, Facebook, Twitter and Lyft. But you can uninstall the apps you don't use-Other apps downloaded: I installed the Google versions of Gmail, Calendar, Clock and Photos to replace the Huawei versions. Although, the Huawei versions are simple reskins that still run the Google apps underneath, so this isn't a necessary tweak. I did this just for my own comfort and familiarity, simply as I am used to the Google versions.Additional Note: If you prefer to use Google's Clock app as your alarm clock, make sure to enable ALL notification permissions for that app (like Priority Notifications, Lockscreen notifications, etc.). Let's just say I didn't initially do that, and almost was late for work the first day I tried using this phone as my alarm...OVERALL:If I had rated this phone immediately after using it in its stock form for an hour, I would have given this 3 stars (for excellent hardware and terrible software out of the box). But after using this phone for several days and making the tweaks I described above, I have grown to like this phone enough to rate it a solid 5 stars. I like it enough that I have put away my Nexus 5X in a drawer and will be using the Honor 8 for the foreseeable future. I do recommend this phone for the power Android user and anyone else who is comfortable making tweaks, as well as someone who doesn't care about their software experience but does want a high-quality, fast and powerful phone. If you are someone new to Android who wants an inexpensive phone and can tolerate some sluggishness, I'd suggest getting a Nexus 5X instead. Or even a cheaper Android phone such as Blu. I don't believe the extra cost for the extra features of the Honor 8 will be worth it to the latter type of users.

The Honor 8 feels like a top-of-the-line phone at half the price (or a third, if you count a certain infamous new flagship phone). Where did they cut corners? I mean they had to cut some corners, right? Actually, it doesn't feel like they did. This is a very solid offering that makes it hard to justify paying any more.

      First things you'll notice:

Gorgeous phone. The light diffraction pattern on the back is gorgeous and has to be seen to be believed- tell people you only spent money on a budget phone and they'll be left scratching their heads. It's a gorgeous little phone, replete with features to make it feel nice. The vibration in particular is a star- it's been a long time since I had a phone that felt this good. The screen is also quite gorgeous, and was a definite upgrade from my old MotoG.

Slippery as snot. This phone is 100% Gorilla Glass front and back. That means if you put it on any surface with a tilt, such as the arm of a couch, it's going to leap off toward the floor. Fret not, for unless you're standing on the third floor and chucking the phone at concrete Gorilla Glass is tough stuff. I'd recommend a clear TPU case if you want some slip protection, although it's a shame to cover up that back plate.

USB-C and a headphone jack. Some competitors can't manage both.

Great sound. Okay it's only one mobile speaker so it's not perfect and it does distort a little at high volume, but this is absolutely the best sound quality you could expect for a single speaker phone. It's done well.

Weird extra bits. Huawei ships the phone with their own launcher, which means when you boot up the phone you'll see a weird affair that doesn't match stock Android. If you don't like what you see, install something like the Google Now launcher and the phone will instantly feel a lot closer to stock. There are other oddities in the manual, such as the ability to take a screenshot by rapping the screen twice with your knuckle. It's a weird inclusion, and the standard Android equivalent is still there (volume down + power to screenshot) but I'm finding myself using the gestures from time to time.

And more! This is one of the cheapest phones to still include NFC (necessary for Android Pay). The phone currently runs Android 7 (fairly up-to-date). Did I mention the fingerprint scanner? It's lightning-fast and accurate.

      Pros:

Amazing value. You get a phone that does pretty much everything the flagship phones do, at half the price. I love it.

Sleek experience. Great screen, great vibration, beautiful phone, with all the ports.

All the features. Fingerprint scanner, NFC, gestures, USB-C, and a headphone jack.

      Cons:

Battery life when being used continually is borderline low. If I'm reading a book or gaming with the screen continually on I can see a 30% drop in a few hours, which feels a bit paltry. However, the standby power is a different story. If the phone is just doing normal quick texting and calls, the battery feels huge. I think this is due to Huawei doing their own in-house processors, which are suited more to the Chinese market. Apparently they expect their customers to have a charge cable handy when they're gaming, and to use the phone mainly in bursts throughout the day. That makes sense, it's just different, so it won't be for everyone.

As many people report the phone is quick to heat up under heavy use- this may actually be a pro because the glass back does a good job wicking heat away from the internals. Your phone is paradoxically cooler inside, because the heat is coming out faster. In theory, this means that although the phone can get hot, it'll run harder for longer before having to throttle back due to heat. Again, it's just a little different.

The stock UI and bloatware that Huawei puts on this phone is dumb. If you were getting this phone for grandma, I'd install the Google Now launcher and disable some of the stock apps that keeps asking for attention. More manufacturers just need to use stock Android, and quit packaging this bloat. Ten minutes of installing and disabling, and any user will be able to customize the phone to their liking.

      Overall:

Loving it. I spent half as much as a flagship phone, and I can do everything they do. Sure the phone slides off my couch all the time (I have a silicone case coming in), and the battery is a little short (I have USB-C cables coming in), but overall it's a lovely experience. Highly recommended, especially if like me you mostly only use the phone in bursts, like reading or gaming a few times a day.

When I started looking for a new android phone I could take on international trips and leave my more expensive devices at home, I had three requirements, a decent camera, a decent battery, and nfc that actually works, for a price that wouldn't break my heart if it were lost or stolen on my trips. To be fair, there are many phones that are better than the honor 8, and at the ~$400 price point it would be reasonable to choose one of the midrange segment competitors, like oneplus or axon, or maybe dip into the more budget priced moto g5 or honor 5x/6x.

But this phone can be found on amazon for $250-275, and at that price you simply cannot find a better unlocked phone.

The phone's kirin 950 is slightly slower than last year's flagship android processors, the snapdragon 810/820/821, but there are a few areas where it actually outperforms the 821. Overall app performance is fine, and if you're not playing the newest, most demanding games you probably won't notice any difference in performance between the honor 8 and any other flagship phone.

The glass body is either something you're going to love or something you'll cover in a protective case and never think about again, and as the excellent camera is covered by the glass rear panel it is probably worth investing in a case as a crack across the body of the phone could ruin any photos. The 5.2 inch screen is fine and is often reviewed as quite small, even though just a few years ago it would have been ridiculed as a massive phablet for a clown to use at the circus. I guess I just want a telephone that can make and receive calls and fit inside a human sized pocket, but evidently in the bizzare cyberpunk dystopia of 2017 people want huge phones that burst into fireballs to strap securely on their face so they can escape into blocky low fidelity vr hellscapes, blissfully ignorant of a world spinning head-on into the great filter.

      Well, to each their own.

The rear fingerprint scanner isn't just best in class, but is the best of any phone released to date, including the newest models from samsung and lg, and the fingerprint scanner doubles as a programmable button which sounds like a gimmick but is actually incredibly useful.

Another best in class feature is the rear camera, which produces photos which rival the most expensive samsung and apple models in ideal lighting; nighttime or poorly lit interior performance is only mediocre, although still much better than any other sub $600 phones. The provided camera app is responsive and gives good auto performance as well as a pro mode that allows a good deal of customization. The adjustable software enabled bokeh effect is more hit or miss than the effect on the dual camera iphones, and frankly is a dumb gimmick, but it's also a dumb gimmick on an iphone costing three times as much.

An available update to android 7 also upgrades huawei's emui skin to version 5.0, still not close to a stock android but much improved over the out of the box experience. Battery life after the update to android 7 is very similar to 6, something that can't be said for many other phones, including segment competitors axon 7 and oneplus3/3t. Expect the battery to comfortably last well into a second day unless you're streaming video or playing demanding games for hours at a stretch. The included fast charger will refill the device in just under 90 minutes, with a 50% charge in 25-30 minutes. The quick charge is only compatible with huawei's proprietary charger, so if you need more than one quick charger you can search amazon for the "honor 8 gift box" which includes a camera stick, charging cable, and an extra charger for $10.

All things considered, while you can buy a better phone, the honor 8 is enough phone for practically anybody, and when it's routinely available for under $300 dollars you'd be hard pressed to find a better bargain.
