Fire Emblem: Awakening offers a unique blend of in-battle strategy, vast character customization, and 3-D cinematic graphics that appeal to a wide range of gamers. In this fantasy adventure for the Nintendo 3DS, you have the power to turn the tides of battle in an epic war against a dark dragon. Your fire-breathing foe threatens to destroy the entire empire with help from his armies of the undead. But, with your loyal crew of fighters, you could be the one to stop him for good.
In this game, you’ll join Chrom, brother to Ylisse’s empress and commander of its forces, in a fantasy world teetering on the brink of war. It’s your duty to guide a team of Ylisse’s finest soldiers - knights, mages, archers, and more - against the marauding Plegian bandits. To succeed, you will need to carefully choose the units you take into battle. As you lead your team through battles across maps that span entire kingdoms, your army will grow. Some characters are willing to join you quickly, while others may need more persuasion. Each character earns experience in battle, leveling up and gaining strength and abilities as they do so. It’s up to you to guide their moves, choose their weapons, and direct their attacks.
Create your own customized soldier and join a massive cast of interesting characters who all have their own stories to tell. Heighten your power on the battlefield by strengthening the bonds between your troops and even enlisting a friend of your own. Plus, with StreetPass and SpotPass options, you can access new items, characters, and maps.

- Reviewed in the United States on August 11, 2013I'd never played a 3ds game before this, I'd been playing mostly regular DS games on my XL. I was a bit hesitant at first, when looking for games to purchase for my 3ds. I thought to myself "Maybe I should go with a classic, New Super Mario Bros 2, or maybe Donkey Kong Country?" I read some reviews for this game, but I'd never played Fire Emblem before so I wasn't sure if it was just nostalgia or if it was actually a good game.
I've now beaten the game and can now confirm that this is a great game for newplayers (And I'm assuming return-players as well)
Pros:
Good, long storyline: The story took me maybe 40 hours to complete, and none of it felt like a chore at all, I was deeply engrossed in the experience. I've never been so absorbed in a handheld game
Characters: Each character has a unique, well-detailed personality, and you really start to feel like they could all be real people, and like they're all really your friends. And with such a vast amount of characters, this couldn't have been easy. There are easily over 30 characters in the game, and throughout the game, you really start to understand each individual one. If you play it on the "Classic Mode" where if a unit falls in battle, they're gone for good (which I'd recommend trying) you really feel like your good friend has passed, urging you to restart and try the whole battle again to save your friends and see what you can do better.
Gameplay: The gameplay is a classic turn-based chessboard kind of game, with a lot of strategy, and a little luck, you move all your units, enemy moves theirs, and you get a little overview detailing your odds of winning or losing before striking the enemy. Once you strike, you go into an animation where your unit and the enemy fight. I never got sick of the animation, it was always so smooth. You also have actions you can do during the animation, you can pause, fast forward, and move the camera around. And for those that would get sick of the animation, you can skip it just as easily.
Another thing I loved was that you could pair units up, increasing your stats during battle, and after the battle, your units can develop a friendship, or even marriage! As their friendship grows, so do your bonuses, sometimes they will deflect hits for each other, and sometimes they will strike with their partner against the enemy. Each time their friendship grows, you get a unique cutscene and mini-storyline with the two units. I thought this was especially well-done, the mini-stories were all very unique and made you understand the characters more. Characters have multiple people they can marry, and the game does a really good job at making you feel like whoever you have them marry was the person they were supposed to marry all along, there are only two units that the game makes you feel like "These two have to be together"
Sound: The music always felt well-placed, intense scenes with intense music, sad parts with sad music and the voice actors and actresses did a really good job getting into character. Even now, it's been almost a month since I last played the game and I can still clearly remember all character's voices and the catchy melodies are still in my head.
Graphics: The graphics are as good as 3D character graphics are going to get, It's easy to forget you're playing a handheld game with graphics so rich and smooth
Cons: The only thing I really have to complain about is that once you beat it, there's not very much incentive to continue playing, there's a lot of free DLC you can do, but it doesn't really feel necessary to do it once you finish. Some others might find it more interesting than I did, you can keep getting new characters and developing friendships, but for me, it felt like i was done after the main story
Closing Thoughts:
I'm only upset that I'll never be able to play the game for the first time ever again, the 40 hour ride while playing was a blast, and this game has me a Fire Emblem fan, I only hope the next one is just as good as this one.
I'd say the game is a great purchase for anyone who has a 3DS, even if you've never played a Fire Emblem game before. There's a lot of customization, fun gameplay, and a great story that you'll definitely remember
- Reviewed in the United States on February 7, 2013I got my copy from Amazon.com directly a couple of days late, but hey, I'm patient. (I noticed that it is still listed out of stock from Amazon, but I did get mine from them - $39.99 and free Prime shipping - and not a marked up 3rd party seller). It did score a 9.6 on IGN (my recommended game review site), but has garnered top scores from most major video game publications and ratings sites. I count this among the three MUST buy 3DS games: Mario Kart 7, Super Mario in 3D Land, and now Fire Emblem Awakening. This is not a remake of an earlier Fire Emblem game, and this shows the amazing potential of this handheld system when developers put forth the effort.
And patience is being rewarded. Over the years I have played this series, mostly fan translated versions on various emulators on phones, PCs and Tablets. I actually started replaying the old titles in anticipation of this one.
So, I'm not too far in the game, but I wanted to give a few first impressions. First of all, man up (or woman up) and select the regular difficulty and do not set the option to revive dead characters. Part of the fun of Fire Emblem is trying to keep your players alive despite overwhelming odds. If you are itching for some bruising, then up the difficulty for the first time through. There are two ways this changes the gameplay for me. If I play through on the higher difficulty setting the first time, then I lose more characters. So then when I play through again, I try to keep more of them alive, OR I pop the difficulty down a bit and try to keep more folks alive. On the other hand, if you play through at a lower difficulty, you probably keep more characters alive, therefore seeing their stories progress, thereby giving you a more rounded out experience. And then on subsequent plays through you can up the difficulty. But then you already know how some characters' stories pan out, so you might be tempted to save the ones that have the 'better' stories or the ones that you may have lost on a previous play through. It's really up to you. And you can unlock even tougher settings beyond the already insanely tough 'Lunatic' setting.
The battle system is solid Tactical JRPG. I would say this game bears some similarity to Shining Force (Sega Genesis) and Advance Wars. But it also bears some similarity to the classic TRPGs such as Final Fantasy Tactics and Disgaea. Battle is carried out on a top down grid. When you enter an attack, it cuts to a special attack screen. The cuts look AMAZING. And battle is fluid and fun. You have to plan ahead, and if you don't then you're going to get owned. Especially on higher difficulty settings. But the old battle style is similar but with some tweaks, such as the partner system (much like Disgaea, Gungnir, Ragnarok Tactics and others) where you get an assist from a nearby unit.
The graphics are jaw dropping for a system that weighs only a couple of pounds and has tiny little cartridges. The 3D scaling is simply perfect in this game. Not like some of the other lazy games that are remakes or obvious budget minded developments. Instead of just layers of 3D, this game has visual depth. You have to see it to believe it.
There is a ridiculous amount of customization in this game. You can pretty much tweak the settings to achieve whatever game play style you want.
If you haven't played a Fire Emblem game before, then do yourself a service and get this game! It's tougher than a lot of other Tactical RPGs out there, but also have fast gameplay which sets it apart from Ragnarok Tactics and even Gungnir. The gameplay and story will keep you glued to this game for hours. And you WILL want to play it over again. It's the most replayable SRPG series since the old Ogre Battle / Tactics Ogre titles. I'm not through it yet and I am already looking forward to changing some things up on my next play through. And unlike Ragnarok Tactics, the game is fast and fun and really great to play through!

5.0 out of 5 stars Excelente juego!!

4.0 out of 5 stars Awesome game!
I was quite surprised when I played the game. I thought it would be an easy tactics game.
No. It isn't.
The difficulty settings is fantastic! Lunatic mode is impossible for me. The classic mode was brutal. But this game is fantastic for people who are looking for a challenge. It's like a game of chess!
Once I finished this game, I woukd love to buy more of this series.
