The cars had been heading towards the coastal city of Faro on the A22 motorway, which remained partially closed for three hours after the accident.

The British woman, initially described as a 60-year-old, was confirmed late last night to be an 83-year-old.

It is not yet clear whether she and her husband, 84, who survived the crash with minor injuries, lived in the area or were on holiday.

The other two people killed were a 56-year-old woman believed to live locally and a seven-year-old boy travelling in the same car.

A two-year-old boy was seriously injured, and another two children, one a nine-month-old baby, suffered minor injuries.

It was not immediately clear this morning how the accident had happened.

Initial reports said a van carrying tourists to Faro Airport was among the vehicles damaged, although officials had yet to confirm this today, and none of the occupants are understood to be British.

A witness told Portuguese newspaper Correio da Manha that the fourth vehicle involved in the accident crashed into the other three at speed as they were stationary on the dual carriageway after colliding.

Pictures from the scene showed a white car with its rear end smashed in and its tyres blown out and a child’s pushchair on the road beside it.

Another car was so badly crumpled that there remained only a twisted mangle of metal where the front two seats would normally be.

Firefighters put a huge sheet over another badly-damaged vehicle so they could cut out a victim who was trapped.

The British husband and wife have not been named.
