Tip: Categorizing images
Thanks a lot for contributing to the Wikimedia Commons! Here's a tip to make your uploads more useful: Why not add some categories to describe them? This will help more people to find and use them.
Here's how:
1) If you're using the UploadWizard, you can add categories to each file when you describe it. Just click "more options" for the file and add the categories which make sense:
2) You can also pick the file from your list of uploads, edit the file description page, and manually add the category code at the end of the page.

For example, if you are uploading a diagram showing the orbits of comets, you add the following code:

This will make the diagram show up in the categories "Astronomical diagrams" and "Comets".
When picking categories, try to choose a specific category ("Astronomical diagrams") over a generic one ("Illustrations").
Thanks again for your uploads! More information about categorization can be found in Commons:Categories, and don't hesitate to leave a note on the help desk.--EugeneZelenko 15:04, 14 August 2006 (UTC)
Image Tagging Image:Petercoyoteheadshot02feb06.jpg
Thanks for uploading Image:Petercoyoteheadshot02feb06.jpg. I notice the image page currently doesn't specify who created the content, so the copyright status is unclear. If you have not created this media yourself then you need to argue that we have the right to use the media on Wikimedia Commons (see copyright tagging below). If you have not created the media yourself then you should also specify where you found it, i.e., in most cases link to the website where you got it, and the terms of use for content from that page. If the content is a derivative of a copyrighted work, you need to supply the names and a licence of the original authors as well.
If the media also doesn't have a copyright tag, then you must also add one. If you created/took the picture, audio, or video then you can use cc-by-sa-2.5 to release it under the Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike license or PD-self to release it into the public domain. See Commons:Copyright tags for the full list of copyright tags that you can use.
Note that any unsourced and untagged images will be deleted one week after they have been uploaded, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. If you have uploaded other media, please check that you have specified their source and copyright tagged them, too. You can find all your uploads using the Gallery tool. Thank you. —Angr 10:39, 28 March 2007 (UTC)
Image deletion warning | Image:HolyFcku.jpg has been listed at Commons:Deletion requests so that the community can discuss whether it should be kept or not. We would appreciate it if you could go to voice your opinion about this at its entry. If you created this image, please note that the fact that it has been proposed for deletion does not necessarily mean that we do not value your kind contribution. It simply means that one person believes that there is some specific problem with it, such as a copyright issue. If the file is up for deletion because it has been superseded by a superior derivative of your work, consider the notion that although the file may be deleted, your hard work (which we all greatly appreciate) lives on in the new file. |

Please help replace this outdated license
Hello!
Thank you for donating images to the Wikimedia Commons. You have uploaded some images in the past with the license PD. While this was a license acceptable in the early days of Wikimedia, since January 2006, this license has been deprecated and since October 2008 no new uploads with this license was allowed.
The license on older images should be replaced with a better and more specific license/permissions and you can help by checking the images and adding PD-self if you are the author or one of the other templates that you can see in the template on the image page.
Thank you for your help. If you need help feel free to ask at Commons talk:Licensing or contact User:Zscout370.
The images we would like you to check are:

If you are the copyright holder and the creator of the file, please read Commons:But it's my own work! for tips on how to provide evidence of that.
The file you added has been deleted. If you have written permission from the copyright holder, please have them send us a free license release via COM:VRT. This media may be deleted. |
A file that you have uploaded to Wikimedia Commons, File:Christine Hallquist.jpg, is missing information about where it comes from or who created it, which is needed to verify its copyright status. Please edit the file description and add the missing information, or the file may be deleted.
If you created the content yourself, enter If someone else created the content, or if it is based on someone else's work, the source should be the address to the web page where you found it, the name and ISBN of the book you scanned it from, or similar. You should also name the author, provide verifiable information to show that the content is in the public domain or has been published under a free license by its author, and add an appropriate template identifying the public domain or licensing status, if you have not already done so. Warning: Wikimedia Commons takes copyright violations very seriously and persistent violators will be blocked from editing. Please add the required information for this and other files you have uploaded before adding more files. If you need assistance, please ask at the help desk. Thank you! |

Round 2 of Picture of the Year 2018 is open!
Dear Jessamyn,
You are receiving this message because we noticed that you voted in R1 of the 2018 Picture of the Year contest, but not yet in the second round. Wikimedia users are invited to vote for their favorite images featured on Commons during the last year (2018) to produce a single Picture of the Year.
Hundreds of images that have been rated Featured Pictures by the international Wikimedia Commons community in the past year were entered in this competition. These images include professional animal and plant shots, breathtaking panoramas and skylines, restorations of historical images, photographs portraying the world's best architecture, impressive human portraits, and so much more.
There are two total rounds of voting. In the first round, you voted for as many images as you liked.
In the final (and current) round, you may vote for a maximum of three images. The image with the most votes will become the Picture of the Year 2018.
Round 2 will end 17 March 2019, 23:59:59.
Thanks,
the Wikimedia Commons Picture of the Year committee 18:04, 16 March 2019 (UTC)

Hello! Do you have any information on who originally painted the File:Daisy Turner Painting.jpg, and when? Your photograph is a Derivative work of the painting, and it is unclear whether the original painting is free to use (i.e. public domain). If the painting is not free, the photograph cannot be hosted on Commons. --Animalparty (talk) 17:13, 17 August 2019 (UTC)
- I don't, but I should be able to find out about who did it and when. Jessamyn (talk) 17:18, 17 August 2019 (UTC)
File:Scott Smith futurist.jpg
Hi. I'm OTRS agent. I've received a ticket about this file. The file says it's a "Work for hired". Please elaborate. Thanks. --Ganímedes (talk) 19:54, 11 January 2020 (UTC)
- It's hard to me understand how could you missinterpreted this. If you're an editor for hired, you must declared right now. Otherwise, we can't continue. And I'll make the Wikipedia admin verify the article as well. Regards. --Ganímedes (talk) 20:35, 11 January 2020 (UTC)
- Hello and thank you. I am not an editor for hire; I am aware of the regulations. I had written this article about Scott Smith and had contacted him to see about a photo as I have done with many other Wikipedia articles (recently AJ Dungo as an example, Waubgeshig Rice as an older example, though that photo did not get OTRS permissions recorded in time). I said he must send a photo that he owned the copyright to. He sent this one along saying "I own the copyrights" and I presumed it was a work-for-hire situation since it didn't look like an obvious selfie. No worries, I'm happy to go make a post on the noticeboard. Jessamyn (talk) 21:02, 11 January 2020 (UTC)
- If you suspected a work-for-hired situation, you should explain the subject that the copyright holder is the photographer instead of assuming things. I'm not convinced at all since as you own says, this is not the first time you follow this procedure. But I prefer to wait for some other agent. Regards. --Ganímedes (talk) 21:24, 11 January 2020 (UTC)
- Yup, I know now. In the past, when the person providing their photo said they owned the copyright, it was a work-for-hire situation. This time it wasn't and I was surprised. We can let the noticeboard people make a determination. Jessamyn (talk) 21:26, 11 January 2020 (UTC)
- Pay for the photo doesn't give copyrights. Only a written contract between the subject and the photographer selling CR does. If it's a photo-for-hired, even so OTRS statement is not valid. Still, we need to verify the contract. So, if you suspect this situation, you shouldn't upload the file at first. --Ganímedes (talk) 21:52, 11 January 2020 (UTC)
- Yes, thank you. I understand. This turned out to be a selfie, so the subject and the photographer is the same. Jessamyn (talk) 22:07, 11 January 2020 (UTC)
- As you, I've got also doubts this is a selfie. --Ganímedes (talk) 22:09, 11 January 2020 (UTC)

- @Denniscabrams I'm certain it's a photo of him and the source information at the Library of Congress says that the photo was taken in 1972. I think it's more likely that the date is off in the source document. Maybe the photo should be renamed to call the date into question. I agree, it's confusing. Thanks for uploading File:Welcome Aboard! A Typical Trans-Texas Airways Hostess (cropped).jpg. I notice that the file page either doesn't contain enough information about the license or it contains contradictory information about the license, so the copyright status is unclear.
If you created this file yourself, then you must provide a valid copyright tag. For example, you can tag it with GFDL to release it under the multi-license GFDL plus Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike All-version license or you can tag it with PD-self to release it into the public domain. (See Commons:Copyright tags for the full list of license tags that you can use.) If you did not create the file yourself or if it is a derivative of another work that is possibly subject to copyright protection, then you must specify where you found it (e.g. usually a link to the web page where you got it), you must provide proof that it has a license that is acceptable for Commons (e.g. usually a link to the terms of use for content from that page), and you must add an appropriate license tag. If you did not create the file yourself and the specific source and license information is not available on the web, you must obtain permission through the VRT system and follow the procedure described there. Note that any unsourced or improperly licensed files will be deleted one week after they have been marked as lacking proper information, as described in criteria for deletion. If you have uploaded other files, please confirm that you have provided the proper information for those files, too. If you have any questions about licenses please ask at Commons:Village pump/Copyright or see our help pages. Thank you. |
