Description |
English: This painting shows the nereid (or sea nymph) Amphitrite, wife of the sea god Poseidon, borne in queenly procession on the backs of dolphins and other sea creatures. The lush colors, curving bodies and cloth textures exemplify the Rococo style. The position of the sea creatures’ bodies and the sash carried by putti draw the eye towards the sea queen, reinforcing her importance. |
