Image Tagging Image:The_New_Zealand_Story_screenshot.png
[edit]
Thanks for uploading Image:The_New_Zealand_Story_screenshot.png. I notice the image page currently doesn't specify who created the content, so the copyright status is unclear. If you have not created this media yourself then you need to argue that we have the right to use the media on Wikimedia Commons (see copyright tagging below). If you have not created the media yourself then you should also specify where you found it, i.e., in most cases link to the website where you got it, and the terms of use for content from that page. If the content is a derivative of a copyrighted work, you need to supply the names and a licence of the original authors as well.
If the media also doesn't have a copyright tag, then you must also add one. If you created/took the picture, audio, or video then you can use GFDL to release it under the multilicense GFDL plus Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike All-version license or PD-self to release it into the public domain. See Commons:Copyright tags for the full list of copyright tags that you can use.
Note that any unsourced and untagged images will be deleted one week after they have been uploaded, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. If you have uploaded other media, please check that you have specified their source and copyright tagged them, too. You can find all your uploads using the Gallery tool. Thank you. -Nard 23:29, 16 March 2008 (UTC)
- Copyright violation. Screenshot of proprietary software. This also applies to Image:Space Invaders on TV.jpg. See Commons:Screenshots. —LX (talk, contribs) 23:57, 16 March 2008 (UTC)
- This is a personally taken picture of my TV used as a representation of the game. It is the only one available. Maintaining one is in accordance with the copyright ie: You keep one as display value. You delete the rest. I have been searching, I can't find one screenshot of this game for use on http://simple.wikipedia.org/wiki/Space_Invaders am looking, what do you suggest is correct? RTG 00:05, 17 March 2008 (UTC)
- To highlight http://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Image:Vglspace.jpg this is no different to what I did. RTG 00:08, 17 March 2008 (UTC)
- The picture http://commons.wikimedia.org/Bubble_bobble.jpg you deleted came straight from here http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bubble_bobble I am having difficulty using it on http://simple.wikipedia.org/ Any advice (I used pictures names and they dont work until uploaded to commons) RTG 00:16, 17 March 2008 (UTC)
- Please respect my request to keep discussions where they started, as this makes conversations easier to follow. I am watching this page, so I will see responses made here.
- What you describe in your first comment is fair use, which cannot be used on Commons. See Commons:Licensing#Material under the fair use clause is not allowed on the Commons.
- The image you refer to in your second comment could be considered different because it doesn't just show the screen contents, and the inclusion of it may be considered incidental. If you disagree, nominate it for deletion at Commons:Deletion requests. In any case, as on Wikipedia, the fact that other stuff exists is not a useful benchmarks. There are users who screen new uploads, but there's no approval process and things do slip through.
- As for your third comment, again, material under the fair use clause is not allowed on the Commons. —LX (talk, contribs) 19:35, 17 March 2008 (UTC)
- I have looked at the rules you linked me to regarding permission so have made sense of what is allowed but I wonder if you can advise me with the deleted file directly below this section for TAITO_logo.png as according to http://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Commons:Licensing#Simple_design (simple geometry and text) it's OK to picture that (it was speedy deleted). If you would like to check out the picture it is at http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Taito_Corporation (the black and blue logo)... even if I have a clause for it, I dont want to re-upload it without discussing. (perhaps it was just lacking author info but was speedy deleted so discussion first). I wonder if you can say the Commons point of view on characterising with a drawing (of Bubble Bobble characters for instance)? Thanks RTG 12:49, 18 March 2008 (UTC)
- As for your third comment, again, material under the fair use clause is not allowed on the Commons. —LX (talk, contribs) 19:35, 17 March 2008 (UTC)
- In my opinion, Image:TAITO logo.png contains original authorship and is not simple enough to be ineligible for copyright protection, and it also appears at en:Image:TAITO logo.png as a copyrighted image appearing with reference to fair use provisions. If you wish to contest this, you may use Commons:Undeletion requests.
- Computer game characters, like cartoon figures, are usually protected by copyright laws. Any depiction of a copyrighted character, whether directly copied or drawn to look similar, utilises the creative work of the original author, and so it may not be uploaded without a licence from the original author. See Commons:Derivative works for more information. —LX (talk, contribs) 21:43, 18 March 2008 (UTC)
Hello, and thank your for sharing your files with Commons. There seems to be a problem regarding the description and/or licensing of this particular file. Please remember that all uploads require source, author and license information. Could you please resolve these problems, which are described on the page linked in above? You can edit the description page and change the text. Uploading a new version of the file does not change the description of the file. This page may give you more hints on which information may be missing. Please note that if you won't provide a valid license in 7 days your image will be deleted and if you upload a lot of images without licenses you may be blocked from editing wikimedia-commons. Thank you.

Tip: Categorizing images
[edit]
Thanks a lot for contributing to the Wikimedia Commons! Here's a tip to make your uploads more useful: Why not add some categories to describe them? This will help more people to find and use them.
Here's how:
1) If you're using the UploadWizard, you can add categories to each file when you describe it. Just click "more options" for the file and add the categories which make sense:
2) You can also pick the file from your list of uploads, edit the file description page, and manually add the category code at the end of the page.

For example, if you are uploading a diagram showing the orbits of comets, you add the following code:

This will make the diagram show up in the categories "Astronomical diagrams" and "Comets".
When picking categories, try to choose a specific category ("Astronomical diagrams") over a generic one ("Illustrations").
Thanks again for your uploads! More information about categorization can be found in Commons:Categories, and don't hesitate to leave a note on the help desk.BotMultichillT 06:15, 6 February 2009 (UTC)

misleading photo info
[edit]Sorry for any errors I make here as I'm not a wikipedia user, but I wanted to alert you to a misleading piece of information regarding your picture here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:Projected_Image_of_Madeline.JPG and here: http://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Madeline_overlooks_the_Suir.JPG
I'm not sure where you got your information, but this is actually a photo by the artist Gottfried Helnwein ( http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Helnwein ), of a girl from Waterford called Molly. It was part of an art installation by the artist in Waterford in 2008. The picture of Molly on the old mill was left up longer than the rest of the installation.
Any resemblance to Madelaine McCann is purely incidental, and it is not a digitally enhanced photo of what she may look like as she grows older.
You can see more information about the art installation in Waterford here: http://www.helnwein.com/kuenstler/exhibitions/artikel_3606.html
And here you will find some articles about the installation: http://www.gottfriedhelnwein.ie/country/ireland_special/abstracts_2.html
Please correct your information about the photo as it is incorrect. I would appreciate if you could reply to me by email: cyril @ helnwein . com
Regards,
Cyril

Round 2 of Picture of the Year 2018 is open!
[edit]Dear RTG,
You are receiving this message because we noticed that you voted in R1 of the 2018 Picture of the Year contest, but not yet in the second round. Wikimedia users are invited to vote for their favorite images featured on Commons during the last year (2018) to produce a single Picture of the Year.
Hundreds of images that have been rated Featured Pictures by the international Wikimedia Commons community in the past year were entered in this competition. These images include professional animal and plant shots, breathtaking panoramas and skylines, restorations of historical images, photographs portraying the world's best architecture, impressive human portraits, and so much more.
There are two total rounds of voting. In the first round, you voted for as many images as you liked.
In the final (and current) round, you may vote for a maximum of three images. The image with the most votes will become the Picture of the Year 2018.
Round 2 will end 17 March 2019, 23:59:59.
Thanks,
the Wikimedia Commons Picture of the Year committee 18:04, 16 March 2019 (UTC)
Source of derivative work is not properly indicated: File:8bf4713993364dc98ae1f78abd321361--premières-nations-studio-portraits1122 col.jpg
[edit]This file may be deleted. |
A file that you have uploaded to Wikimedia Commons, File:8bf4713993364dc98ae1f78abd321361--premières-nations-studio-portraits1122 col.jpg, is a derivative work, containing an "image within an image". Examples of such works would include a photograph of a sculpture, a scan of a magazine cover, or a map that has been altered from the original. In each of these cases, the rights of the creator of the original must be considered, as well as those of the creator of the derivative work.
While the description page states who made this derivative work, it currently doesn't specify who created the original work, so the overall copyright status is unclear. If you did not create the original work depicted in this image, you will need to specify the owner of the copyright. Please edit the file description and add the missing information, or the file may be deleted. If you created the original content yourself, enter this information as the source. If someone else created the content, the source should be the address to the web page where you found it, the name and ISBN of the book you scanned it from, or similar. You should also name the author, provide verifiable information to show that the content is in the public domain or has been published under a free license by its author, and add an appropriate template identifying the public domain or licensing status, if you have not already done so. Please add the required information for this and other files you have uploaded before adding more files. If you need assistance, please ask at the help desk. Thank you! |

File tagging File:Ludy Benjamin (cropped).jpg
[edit]This media was probably deleted.
|
Thanks for uploading File:Ludy Benjamin (cropped).jpg. This media is missing permission information. A source is given, but there is no proof that the author or copyright holder agreed to license the file under the given license. Please provide a link to an appropriate webpage with license information, or ask the author or copyright holder to send an email with copy of a written permission to VRT (permissions-commons@wikimedia.org). You may still be required to go through this procedure even if you are the author yourself; please see Commons:But it's my own work! for more details. After you emailed permission, you may replace the No permission since tag with on file description page. Alternatively, you may click on "Challenge speedy deletion" below the tag if you wish to provide an argument why evidence of permission is not necessary in this case.
Please see this page for more information on how to confirm permission, or if you would like to understand why we ask for permission when uploading work that is not your own, or work which has been previously published (regardless of whether it is your own). The file probably has been deleted. If you sent a permission, try to send it again after 14 days. Do not re-upload. When the VRT-member processes your mail, the file can be undeleted. Additionally you can request undeletion here, providing a link to the File-page on Commons where it was uploaded (:File:Ludy Benjamin (cropped).jpg ) and the above demanded information in your request. |

[edit]Copyright status: File:Parco degli Acquedotti as evening falls.jpg
This media may be deleted. |
Thanks for uploading File:Parco degli Acquedotti as evening falls.jpg. I notice that the file page either doesn't contain enough information about the license or it contains contradictory information about the license, so the copyright status is unclear.
If you created this file yourself, then you must provide a valid copyright tag. For example, you can tag it with GFDL to release it under the multi-license GFDL plus Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike All-version license or you can tag it with PD-self to release it into the public domain. (See Commons:Copyright tags for the full list of license tags that you can use.) If you did not create the file yourself or if it is a derivative of another work that is possibly subject to copyright protection, then you must specify where you found it (e.g. usually a link to the web page where you got it), you must provide proof that it has a license that is acceptable for Commons (e.g. usually a link to the terms of use for content from that page), and you must add an appropriate license tag. If you did not create the file yourself and the specific source and license information is not available on the web, you must obtain permission through the VRT system and follow the procedure described there. Note that any unsourced or improperly licensed files will be deleted one week after they have been marked as lacking proper information, as described in criteria for deletion. If you have uploaded other files, please confirm that you have provided the proper information for those files, too. If you have any questions about licenses please ask at Commons:Village pump/Copyright or see our help pages. Thank you. |

Wikimedia Commons only accepts free content—that is, images and other media files that can be used by anyone, for any purpose. Traditional copyright law does not grant these freedoms, and unless noted otherwise, everything you find on the web is copyrighted and not permitted here. For details on what is acceptable, please read Commons:Licensing. You may also find Commons:Copyright rules useful, or you can ask questions about Commons policies at the Commons:Help desk. If you are the copyright holder and the creator of the file, please read Commons:But it's my own work! for tips on how to provide evidence of that.
The file you added has been deleted. If you have written permission from the copyright holder, please have them send us a free license release via COM:VRT. If you believe that the deletion was not in accordance with policy, you may request undeletion. (It is not necessary to request undeletion if using VRT; the file will be automatically restored at the conclusion of the process.)

- Indeed the link to permissions for that file do not seem to be anything like the CC BY 3.0 it is listed with. I edited it a bit. I did not check the license. ~ R.T.G 09:56, 22 March 2020 (UTC)
- No problem. The speedy deletion script automatically adds a notification for anyone who uploaded a version of the file. The uploader of the original file committed the violation. The uploader of the derivative work appears to have English as a second language, so can't be expected to have read the full terms linked on that website; taking the original file upload and licence on good faith seems reasonable. As you are the fourth person in the chain from the original violation, the level of responsibility for the error is minimal. From Hill To Shore (talk) 14:42, 22 March 2020 (UTC)
File:Sacred IMG 0143.jpg has been listed at Commons:Deletion requests so that the community can discuss whether it should be kept or not. We would appreciate it if you could go to voice your opinion about this at its entry.
If you created this file, please note that the fact that it has been proposed for deletion does not necessarily mean that we do not value your kind contribution. It simply means that one person believes that there is some specific problem with it, such as a copyright issue. Please see Commons:But it's my own work! for a guide on how to address these issues. |

Hi RTG - thanks for uploading many of these to Commons! A tip you've missed; they have some location information in the Flickr tags, which needs to be added to the file categories (e.g. Category:Birds of Manjira Wildlife Sanctuary for File:A Beautiful Pheasant Tailed Jacana (50176889862).jpg), and ideally the descriptions as well. Thanks! - MPF (talk) 12:27, 18 May 2021 (UTC)

September 2021: it's Wiki Loves Monuments time again!
[edit]Hi
You're receiving this message because you've previously contributed to the annual Wiki Loves Monuments contest in Ireland. We'd be delighted if you would enter again this year, and continue to build on the image archive of Ireland's built heritage.
You can find more details at the Wiki Loves Monuments Ireland website. If you have images taken in other countries, you can check the international options. Once again, this year's contest runs until 30 September 2021.
Thanks again for your help and enthusiasm! Smirkybec (talk) 04:40, 11 September 2021 (UTC)

Location?
[edit]Hi RTG - when you uploaded File:A Brahminy Starling with a worm (50028162237).jpg by Hari K Patibanda from Flickr, you forgot to include the photographer's location tags (which he always has with his photos). Unfortunately, the original has now been removed from his Flickr photostream so this vitally important data is now lost. Could you contact the photographer via Flickr, and ask him for the details, please? Thanks! - MPF (talk) 16:20, 12 September 2023 (UTC)
