In particular, Ross images are in the public domain in Germany only if it can be shown that the photographer (usually mentioned on the image itself) has died more than 70 years ago. Ross images that are in the public domain in Germany may still be copyrighted in the United States if they were first published later than 1928 and were still copyrighted in Germany on January 1, 1996 (i.e. if the photographer died in 1926 or later).
