What Exactly Is Push IV Therapy?

Push IV therapy is a way of directly injecting vitamins, minerals, and sometimes drugs into an individual’s bloodstream using a small needle. A sterile needle is placed into a vein, either on the back of your hand or at the top of the forearm, to begin treatment. After the needle has been properly positioned, it is linked to a catheter. From there, we connect a syringe to the other end of the catheter and inject a single dose of the desired vitamins, nutrients, or medications into your bloodstream.

What Is the Difference Between Push IV Therapy and IV Drip Therapy?

Push IV therapy and IV drip therapy both use a tiny needle linked to a catheter to provide nutrients, fluids, and/or drugs intravenously. The distinction is that for push IV therapy, doctors use a syringe to inject nutrients into the other end of the catheter, whereas IV drip therapy depends on gravity to allow nutrients to gradually “drip” into the catheter. Both vitamin therapies have advantages, and there is some overlap in the specific vitamin infusions that can be provided with either modality.

Push IV therapy is quicker, requiring about 3-5 minutes, whereas IV drip therapy might take anything from 30 to 60 minutes. However, not all vitamin infusions are accessible as an IV push. Some vitamins, nutrients, and medications must be taken more slowly to avoid side effects including nausea and lightheadedness.
