LGBTQ+ Community Resource Spotlight
The LGBTQ+ Community Resource Spotlight uplifts different LGBTQ+ resources across campus. This week, we will be highlighting the UMD Libraries' Queer Lit Guide!

UMD Libraries Queer Lit Guide

Last year, UMD Libraries added over 170 queer literature titles to their collection! This guide is designed to give a preview of some of the Queer* Literature available, and to explain why it is so important we fight for representation of all kinds in our literature and libraries.

According to the American Library Association's 2022 Banned Books report, a "record 2,571 unique titles were targeted for censorship, a 38% increase from the 1,858 unique titles targeted for censorship in 2021. Of those titles, the vast majority were written by or about members of the LGBTQIA+ community and people of color" (2023).

Despite the increase in book bans, UMD Libraries are committed to protecting and increasing representation of Queer Literature in their collections.

Then, we will “sleep out” in a classroom overnight to increase our empathy for homeless youth.

The overnight portion of the event is optional, and everyone is welcome to just come to the evening event on November 22nd!

Trans Maryland Internship Spring 2025

Trans Maryland is a non-profit organization dedicated to advocating for transgender, gender non-conforming and nonbinary people all across the state of Maryland. Every year, we work with a variety of leaders and community members in pursuit of our mission.

We work with state legislators to advance policy around a variety of trans equity topics, with state agencies to implement recently passed legislation, with county and state-level commissions and boards to promote trans/queer/LGBTQIA+ equity initiatives, and directly with thousands of trans Marylanders as they seek name and gender-marker changes on their ID documents, build trans community, and share access to resources.

Trans Maryland is seeking 2-4 undergraduate or graduate interns who:
  • Either have lived experience in trans and queer topics, or have strong allyship and a learning mindset. Being trans or queer is not required, though it is preferred, as we are a trans-led organization.
  • Are interested in or have experience with the legislative and policy process at the state level. Previous experience is not required, though it is preferred.
  • Want to better understand how to make tangible change in our local communities
  • Have a strong tolerance for uncertainty, can work independently, and have interest in a work environment and work expectations outside of many workplace norms
  • Enjoy working with the public
  • Don’t mind navigating red tape and bureaucracy when it’s needed

The priority deadline to apply is Friday, November 15th; however, applications will be accepted on a rolling basis until positons are filled.

FreeState Justice Development and
Communications Internship Applications

FreeState Justice is a legal advocacy organization that seeks to improve the lives of low-income lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer, intersex and asexual (“LGBTQIA+”) Marylanders. Despite recent, incremental judicial victories for the national LGBTQ community, the low-income LGBTQIA+ population continues to struggle with legal challenges such harassment, complex family law issues, and anti-LGBTQ discrimination in employment, housing, foster care, healthcare and public accommodations.

FreeState is looking for an intern to join their Development and Communications team, a group of advocates who help get all of our organization's vital resources to those who need them the most. This involves creating social media calendars, helping manage the website, assisting in donor management and recruitment, and much more!
