Also, even if he hadn't just escaped a Stalinist prison camp, Stalin's forces actively sought to capture even anti-fascist partisans who weren't members of the Soviet war effort - just as they had killed off all the actual communists in the 1930s. Near the end of WW2 some Polish insurgents joined the Red Army or Soviet partisans in an effort to "clear their record" and avoid incarceration/execution while continuing the fight. undo
