From 1957 until 1985 he worked for the [[British Geological Survey]] (BGS), formerly know as the Institute of Geological Sciences. In 1966 he was selected to set up a Marine Geophysics Unit in the Institute of Geological Sciences (which incorporated the former Geological Survey of Great Britain). This group was created to conduct a regional geophysical survey of [[UKCS|the United Kingdom Continental Shelf]] and was responsible for the discovery and evaluation of the majority of the United Kingdom's oil and gas reserves. In 1973 Robert was appointed Head of the Marine Geophysics Unit, a post which he held for ten years until 1983 when he was appointed Deputy Director of the [[British Geological Survey|BGS]]. In 1985 he left BGS to join [[Britoil]] as their Chief Scientist and was kept on by [[BP]] when the bought Britoil in 1988.
