In 1895, a colonial parliamentary committee recommended the adoption of 2 ft gauge for a number of government railways in areas that did not justify main line railway construction. In February 1898 the recommended gauge for these lines was changed to 2 ft 6 in. The state of Victoria opened the 29 mile Colac to Beech Forest line in the Otway Ranges to the west of the capital in 1902. In 1926, a couple of 2-6-0+0-6-2 Beyer Garratts were ordered by Victorian Railways from Beyer Peacock for use on the taxing Beech Forest line, where heavy loadings had led to the need to run frequent additional trains to clear the traffic. These powerful G class locomotives were used exclusively on this line. |

Banool was a stopping place and railway station located on the now dismantled Victorian Railways narrow gauge Crowes railway line. It opened in 1902 as Moorbanool and was renamed Banool in November 1904. Originally built with 3 tracks, one was removed in 1923. It closed with the closure of the Colac to Beech Forest section of the line in 1962.
Today all that remains is the original Railway Station signage. A portion of the original railway reservation is now part of the Old Beechy Rail Trail.[1]
