Mihail Stanislavov Mihaylov (Михаил Станиславов Михайлов), better known as Big Sha or by his previous name, Misho Shamara, (Мишо Шамара) is a Bulgarian rapper, record producer, and entrepreneur from Varna, Bulgaria. He is one of the originators of Bulgarian hip-hop scene and is respectfully known as “The Father of BG rap”. Mihail Mihaylov was the first artist in Bulgaria, who achieved the American dream, rising from his working class background to become one of the most successful musicians of all time in the region, just by hard work and a streak of more than 30 hit singles from 15 albums. Furthermore Big Sha is the first Bulgarian artist to have international success, touring Europe on regular bases and recording collaborations with two of the biggest American rap superstars: Snoop Dogg in “Dime Piece” and DMX in “The Boy Go Off”. Big Sha received the Lifetime Achievement Award from the First Bulgarian Hip-Hop Awards and during his 20-year long career has been awarded in all the major categories of the most influential music business awards in Bulgaria – MM Music Television Awards and BG Radio Awards.

Besides his career as a recording artist, Big Sha is the founder of the first hip-hop label in Bulgaria R&B Records, creator of the clothing line R&B Wear and the night club franchise R&B Bar. His other endeavours include several hit radio shows, which he hosted, and his novel “Sense of Eternity” co-written with the author Danzel Rebelowski.

Recently Mihail Mihaylov became a full-fledged national hero, when he was the first to oppose the corrupt political system, ruling Bulgaria for the past years, and continued to attack verbally the government, demanding immediate democratic changes, regardless the threats to his life. His quest for freedom led him to the European Parliament in Strasburg, where he gave an eye-opening speech, which changed for good the political course of Bulgarian history.

In his personal life Mihail Mihaylov is a family man and devoted father – he has two children with his wife of 15 years Ani, a girl and a boy, who is already on the fast track to becoming the youngest rap star in Bulgaria himself with several hit singles in his discography under the stage name Lil Sha.

Early life

Mihail Mihaylov is originally from neighborhood of Vuzrazhdane, a housing project in Bulgaria’s biggest port Varna. His parents are Meri and Stanislav Atanasovi – a nurse and a seaman, who live honest and quite life, sharing together the passion for Bulgarian folk dances and touring the country with an amateur dance group. Mihail studies in professional technical school PTG Varna, but from his early teens develops an interest in the US hip-hop culture. He starts as a break-dancer, gaining praise in the underground and soon creates his own dance school where he teaches the moves of MC Hammer. This eventually leads to his nickname The Hammer, which evolves into similar sounding in Bulgarian “Shamara” and becomes his first stage name.

Music career

The first band that Mihail Mihaylov forms is Hamburger M1, which receives cult status only by word of mouth and even though there is no official release of their demo album, the tape makes waves in the underground. Mihail decides to release a proper debut album in 1994 with his new band Gumeni Glavi (“Rubberheads”), but since the music business in Bulgaria is virtually non-existent, he has to produce the project himself, selling his car to finance the recording sessions. Without any publicity and no media support, the first album of Gumeni Glavi called “Kvartal № 41” (Neighborhood #41) becomes an absolute pop-cultural phenomenon – it single-handedly kick-starts the hip-hop scene in Bulgaria and creates Misho Shamara mania among the teen audience. Gumeni Glavi become overnight stars and the album quickly sales 120 000 copies, which for the certification from Bulgarian Association of Music Producers makes the disc four times platinum – a record still unbeaten by any modern Bulgarian musician. The second album of Gumeni Glavi “Gumi Vtora Upotreba” (Second-Hand Tires) proves equally successful and soon Misho Shamara is proclaimed by the public as the top artist of the newly emerged national rap scene.

For the following years Mihail Mihaylov keeps a steady schedule of releasing one album a year without compromising quality, which makes his fan base grew bigger and bigger, while the rise of the hip-hop scene in Bulgaria helps rap music find broader audience. Even the financial crisis of 1996-1997 in the country, which completely shuts down many of the local music labels, has no effect on his career – in the hard times people seem to find the so much needed strength to survive in his filled with street-wisdom lyrics. In 1999 the personal tension inside the band Gumeni Glavi becomes overwhelming, so Misho Shamara decides for his next single to go solo. The other rappers on the scene start to predict his downfall, but they are up for a surprise – the first song under his name is “Fenki, fenki” (“Fans, fans”), which becomes a hip-hop anthem for a whole new generation. The media again are slow to respond, but on the 2001 award show for the leading music channel in Bulgaria MM TV Misho Shamara takes the most important prize – the viewers voted “Hit of the year”.

It turns out that the next chapter in Misho Shamara’s biography is yet to be written – the following LP “Moi” (Mine) makes the impossible, selling 90 000 CDs officially in Bulgaria and sadly becoming the most pirated music record on the market, so the total number of units is estimated to be over 300 000 copies. No one is prepared for the fan frenzy that follows Misho Shamara, even himself – during his national tour, a crowd of screaming fans chase him after the concerts and block his tour bus, something that never have happened for any artist in Bulgaria, dead or alive. Finally the media catch up and soon Misho Shamara is on the cover of every magazine and in the studio of every talk show – his larger than life personality makes his fans adore him even more and his quick-wit remarks are quoted even to this day. Eager to raise the bar even higher, Misho Shamara founds the first rap music label in Bulgaria R&B Records and starts to work on the production and marketing of new artists, all of which later will grow into the biggest stars of the hip-hop scene. More creative than ever, Shamara’s single release schedule is now in steady flow of a new music video every month. One of these productions is “Vse oshte sum zamesen” (“I’m still in”), which marks the first time an artist from Bulgaria makes music video in exotic location: the video is a 12 minutes long mini-movie shot entirely in The Dominican Republic. The following year marks a new record for Mihail Mihaylov as a producer – all of the albums of his label R&B Records combined make for an 80% market share from the popular music market in Bulgaria, a sure sign for his total domination of the scene.

In 2004 Misho Shamara releases his greatest hits album called “10 Godini” (10 Years), but an early retirement is not in his plans. Having accomplished everything possible in his home country, Mihail MIhaylov prepares for international tours, rebranding his image with hottest beats, an energetic live show and a new alias – the much more easy to pronounce in English nickname Big Sha. His label evolves with the global concept as well – now all of his production goes through the new music company Front Line Hustle with distribution from Universal Music. Soon the name Big Sha starts to pop-up on the posters for various hip-hop events throughout the globe – an official warm-up for Waka Flocka Flame in Germany, a birthday party for Lil Wayne in Miami and a back to back show with Lil Jon in Sofia are just some of the highlights of his busy tour schedule. Meanwhile his tracks start to feature guest appearances from breakthrough US artists as MC Michael, Drag-On and Crucial Conflict, but all of them are soon to be overshadowed in 2009 by his song with probably the most influential hip-hop artist of all time – Snoop Dogg. Their single together “Dime Piece” is Big Sha’s first full-scale US hip-hop production: the recording is made in MG GROUP, Chicago, while music producer of the song is Ariel Rodriguez, who has worked with R. Kelly, and the video not only features the iconic West-Coast rapper, but is shot by Morocco Vaughn, favorite director of rap super heavies as Kanye West , P.Diddy, Wiz Khalifa and Rick Ross. The song “Dime Piece” puts Big Sha on the world hip-hop map and his next global single is soon to follow – Mihail Mihaylov pairs up with no other than the rap superstar DMX for the hit song “The Boy Go Off”, which marks his most internationally successful release to date.

Business career

Besides being a multitalented artist and producer, Mihail Mihaylov has also established himself as a successful entrepreneur with companies as the iconic street-wear clothing line R&B Wear and the first club franchise in Bulgaria - R&B Club. Without financial backing of any kind, Mihail started his first night club as small bar for close friends and only two years later turned the R&B brand into an empire with net-worth over 10-million dollars, staff of over 400 people and venues in all of the major Bulgarian cities.

Personal life

Mihail Mihaylov is married to Ani Mihaylova. The couple had a wedding in September 2001 after 7-years together and they are inseparable to this date. They have two children – Ani, who is 8 years old and Mihail, who is 10. Both of Mihail’s children have already made their stage debut in songs of his, with Mihail Mihaylov Jr. already having three hit singles under his stage name Lil Sha.

Mihail Stanislavov Mihaylov (Bulgarian: Михаил Станиславов Михайлов) born on December 27, 1972, better known as Big Sha or by his previous name, Misho The Slap (Bulgarian: Мишо Шамара), is a Bulgarian rapper from Varna, Bulgaria. He is known for his socialist leanings and disapproval of Bulgaria's prime minister Boiko Borisov.[1] One of the country's top rap artists in the 1990s and the early 2000s, his career has been waning ever since his partner, Ivan Glavchev (Vanko 1), was sentenced in 2003 to 12 years in prison for running an organization that exported Bulgarian prostitutes, including minors, to France, Spain, Belgium and Italy.[2] He openly supported Bulgaria's last socialist-led government, whose decision to appoint a media tycoon known for his links to organized crime as head of the national security agency sparked nationwide protests against the Oresharski cabinet.[3] He also provoked indignation by calling Bulgaria's former Finance Minister, Simeon Dyankov, "Jewish scum" in 2013.[4][5] The following day he published an apology to the Jewish community in Bulgaria, on his official Facebook page.[6]

Music career

[edit]

Known as "the Hammer", after MC Hammer, he had a group called Hamburger 1 with which he caught some attention. But his success came with Gumeni Glavi (Rubber Heads) when their debut album sold over 120 000 copies in 1994 which is equal to a four times platinum certification from BAMP (Bulgarian Association of Music Producers). Their second album Second-Hand Tires didn't sell as well. After these two albums in 1997 Dj Dido D was introduced to the group and the albums that followed were instant classics in Bulgarian Hip Hop. The albums were called For More Money and For Even More Money. After their success, Gumeni Glavi performed over 200 concerts in Bulgaria but after disputes within the band they split up and Sha began his solo career.[citation needed]

Solo career

[edit]

He reached solo success with the smash hit single, "Fenki, Fenki" ("Fans, Fans") which became infamous for its lyrics. The following album, Moi ("Mine") sold 90 000 units. After this success in 2002 Shamara and Vanko 1 started their own record label R&B Records, through which they released Goliamata Kombina (The Big Duo) which sold over 200 000 copies. His protégés Konsa, 100 Kila, Benjamini and Loshite made numerous hits and so did Sha. In 2003 he released "Azbukata Na Jivota" ("The Alphabet Of Life") which was again on top of the Bulgarian Album Charts. In 2006 he released Obichai Blijnia, Bliji Obichania ("Love Those Close, And Lick Those Loved"), the album contained the hit tracks "Gnusnia Bradan" ("The Disgusting Beardman", a diss track against Spens), "Edin Den Se Napih" ("One Day I Got Drunk") featuring Konsa and Ogi Dog and "Boom Boom" featuring Mc Michael.

In 2007, Misho Shamara (literally Misho the Slap) changed his stage name to Big Sha, and founded a new label, Frontline Hustle, in association with Universal Music Bulgaria and Virginia Records. In 2008, he released Hliab I Amfeti ("Bread and Amphetamines") which featured collaborations with U.S. rappers Crucial Conflict and Drag-On. In 2009, he was featured on LiLana's song "Dime Piece" together with Snoop Dogg.
