As speakers of Slavic languages, the Belarusian and Croatian people share links dating back millennia. |
|||
The two nations have in common histories of long-term domination by their nearby great powers (Hungary and Austria-Hungary in the case of Croatia, Poland-Lithuania and Russia in the case of Belarus). In the twentieth century each achieved a degree of autonomy within an regional federation (Croatia witin Yugoslavia and Belarus within the Soviet Union). In each case the people shared particularly close linguistic and cultural links with immediate neighbors: Belarusians with the Great Russians and Croats with the Serbs. For a brief period in the early 1940s both areas came under the sway of the Berlin-dominated Axis.--> |
