Rosalyn W. Berne is an American scholar, author, and a Professor at the University of Virginia. Her research focuses on ethics in engineering, science, nanotechnologies and engineering education.[1][2] She currently serves as the director of the Online Ethics Center for Engineering and Science.[3]

Biography

Rosalyn W. Berne was born in Philadelphia, where she spent her childhood in a Quaker-founded community.[4] After receiving primary education at a small experimental School, her family moved to Amherst, Massachusetts. She then initiated studies at the Hampton Institute, before graduating with a B.A. and and M.A. in Communication Studies, as well as a PhD in Religious Studies and Bioethics, all from the University of Virginia. Berne's research focuses on the intersections of emerging technologies, science, fiction, and myth, as well as the connections between the human and non-human worlds. Her research and writing interests include engineering ethics, biotechnology and nanotechnology, and engineering education ethics. As an author, she has pubished academic and non-academic books on topics such as engineering ethics, science fiction as well as animal communication, notably relating to the equine world.[5]

Distinctions

In 2002, Berne was awarded a Career Award : Ethics and Belief Inside the Development of Nanotechnologies by the American National Science Foundation (NSF).[6] In 2018 and 2020, she also received research awards from the NSF for her work related to the Online Ethics Center.[7][8]

She has also received awards for her books Waking to Beauty and When the Horses Whisper.[9][10]
