Question from Ricey244 (17:32, 7 October 2021)
Hello,
I just had a question about creating an article. An admin removed a page I tried creating because I didn't have a source when I first published it. I added the sources afterwards and I told them I did and they still deleted the article. Can I attempt to make it again but I'll add a source when I publish it? Or will it get taken down again because I can't make an article again? --Ricey244 (talk) 17:32, 7 October 2021 (UTC)
- @Ricey244: It looks like you're referring to Will Witt. It was tagged for deletion because it was an unsourced biography of a living person, but was speedly deleted under criterion A7 because it did not give a credible indication of notability. It looks like you've already asked about this on the deleting administrator's talk page; I'll follow up there. I don't know what the page was like (only administrators can view deleted pages), but I think the article could be restored to draftspace, where you can work on it without fear of deletion, and submit it to be published when you're ready. Question from Laurenocmd (20:16, 7 October 2021)
Hi, I edited a friend's page and someone reverted it back to the shitty old page bc I didn't include citations, which I was fully intending to do, just took a break. Can I get the full version I updated to add citations to it and be validated or do I have to start again from scratch. I'm not very happy at the moment. Thanks for any help. -Lauren --Laurenocmd (talk) 20:16, 7 October 2021 (UTC)
- @Laurenocmd: Lauren, the version you created still exists in the page history. If you have citations to add to the version, you should do so before committing it; unsourced changes in biographies of living persons are subject to immediate reversion. You can search the page history, find the version you created, edit that version, select all of the text and copy it, then edit the current version of the page and paste your text. Then, before you save the page, add your sources. WikiDan61ChatMe!ReadMe!! 20:22, 7 October 2021 (UTC)

Question from Walkwithoutrhythmandyouwontattracttheworm (01:39, 8 October 2021)
Heya tol. Quick Q, is there any coding/technical knowledge I need to edit Wikipedia? Excuse my long name btw, I couldn't think of anything better. Thanks for everything in advance --Walkwithoutrhythmandyouwontattracttheworm (talk) 01:39, 8 October 2021 (UTC)
- @Walkwithoutrhythmandyouwontattracttheworm: You don't need any coding knowledge to edit Wikipedia — though it can help with the technical side of things, like modules. All you need to edit articles is a basic knowledge of wikitext, and you don't even need that if you use the VisualEditor. If you make a mistake, somebody will come along and fix it later. If you have any questions, feel free to ask! Tol (talk | contribs) @ 02:07, 8 October 2021 (UTC)
InMoment Page: New Editor?
Hi Tol,
Just wondering if you knew which editor I might talk to about the InMoment draft now that you've been taken off of the project. I submitted the new draft about a week ago and haven't heard anything back. I'm aware that it might take a while to hear back, but also hopeful that there might be a way to reach the new editor. Any assistance you can provide would be greatly appreciated. As always, thank you for your time! — Preceding unsigned comment added by 2601:681:5000:949:34B8:263E:3F9:98E0 (talk) 20:03, 8 October 2021 (UTC)
- Hello! There isn't a single editor assigned to review a page — any reviewer can review any submission. I've cleaned up the page. Again, please add links to references of web content; this will greatly help with verifying references. Tol (talk | contribs) @ 20:53, 8 October 2021 (UTC)

Question from Darkdeath-2 on Wikipedia:WikiProject Computing (02:45, 9 October 2021)
Hii I'm I allowd to greate an afrikaans page on the English wikimedia. --Darkdeath-2 (talk) 02:45, 9 October 2021 (UTC)
- @Darkdeath-2: Hello! You can do so to translate it into English; just make sure it's a draft (it should start with
Draft:
). For writing articles in Afrikaans, you should try the Afrikaans Wikipedia. Tol (talk | contribs) @ 17:53, 9 October 2021 (UTC)- Thank you. That is very helpful . Darkdeath-2 (talk) 21:15, 9 October 2021 (UTC)
Bot for uploading images to Commons?
I have been uploading these 11 images for months now. Around every 10 days. Takes around half an hour (timed it today). It is really tedious. I listen to the radio while doing it. That sometimes helps.
A bot could upload it every day. The Commons could delete old images now and then. There is no need to keep them on the Commons. The source pages have all the old maps. There is a timeline slider on each source map page that will pull up any map or graph for any date.
- Commons:File:Timeline of daily new confirmed COVID-19 deaths worldwide.svg
- Commons:File:Timeline of daily new confirmed COVID-19 deaths worldwide per million people.png
- Commons:File:Timeline of daily COVID-19 vaccine doses administered in the US.svg
- Commons:File:World map of total confirmed COVID-19 deaths per million people by country.svg
- Commons:File:World map of total confirmed COVID-19 deaths per million people by country.png
- Commons:File:World map of total confirmed COVID-19 cases per million people.png
- Commons:File:World map of share of people who received at least one dose of COVID-19 vaccine by country.png
- Commons:File:World map of daily new confirmed COVID-19 deaths per million people by country.png
- Commons:File:World map of COVID-19 vaccination doses administered per 100 people by country or territory.png
- Commons:File:Cumulative confirmed COVID-19 deaths, OWID.svg
All of the above maps are OWID maps. This map is from the CDC:
There is a download link on this page:
That download link could be used. Though I can't tell what the URL is. I have been editing the map before uploading it. But it is not really necessary. Especially if I don't have to do this anymore. Plus the bot could keep it updated daily. --Timeshifter (talk) 20:49, 9 October 2021 (UTC)
- @Timeshifter: Neither OWID or the CDC makes their images easy to automatically download (OWID gives a blob, CDC gives a data URI). I'll look into it. Tol (talk | contribs) @ 20:53, 9 October 2021 (UTC)
Question from Darkdeath-2 on User talk:Tol (21:51, 9 October 2021)
Hii TOL. want to ask some questions .
- Am I alowed to create a page based on a 'wereldspektrum' book ?
- Can I take pictures op the photos in the book and post it on my page ?
- what license wil I need if the above is alowed ?
THANK YOU . Darkdeath-2 (talk) 21:51, 9 October 2021 (UTC)
- @Darkdeath-2: I'm not sure how the book is licensed, and it's complicated either way — the quick answer is probably not. I don't think that it's public domain or compatibly licensed. If so:
- You can use it as a reference, just don't copy words verbatim into Wikipedia.
- You can't upload images from it or copy anything from it.
- If it's out of copyright or compatibly licensed, you can copy from it as long as you provide attribution. It's probably not, though. Tol (talk | contribs) @ 22:09, 9 October 2021 (UTC)
Hello Tol. I was wondering what you think is missing to the page "Gústi B". The subject already has over 14 articles from the most popular, and respected news medias in Iceland and the article is well written and accurate. Could you help me fix the article so it can stand? Best regads, Gudjonari — Preceding unsigned comment added by Gudjonari (talk • contribs) 00:25, 10 October 2021 (UTC)
- @Gudjonari: I've restored the previous declines; please do not remove them. You need to demonstrate that he has been the subject of significant coverage in reliable sources. I'll work on the draft, as I think the topic is notable. Tol (talk | contribs) @ 01:35, 10 October 2021 (UTC)
- Hi again Tol. Thank you for that. I would love it if we could make the article look good. Thank you so much for helping. I was having some troubles with reference number 9 as the message said "soft hyphen character in |title= at position 42 (help)" but hopefully you can also help me with that. Your reversion at WP:RM/TR
You are incorrect that your request requires an administrator. Page movers can do a WP:ROUNDROBIN move using suppress redirect to accomplish the swapping of those pages and some have a page swap script that automates the whole process. If you self revert your last edit I'll move it for you myself.--John Cline (talk) 03:29, 10 October 2021 (UTC)
- @John Cline: Huh, I never thought of doing it that way. I can do it myself, in that case. Thanks for letting me know. Tol (talk | contribs) @ 03:31, 10 October 2021 (UTC)
are you going to finish the move. still marked up with draft time content. —¿philoserf? (talk) 08:21, 10 October 2021 (UTC)
- @Philoserf: Sorry about that; I see you've taken care of it. Tol (talk | contribs) @ 17:16, 10 October 2021 (UTC)
Page move process
Hi there, I notice you usually use User:Tol/sandbox/temp to perform round-robin moves when publishing draft articles. I don't have page mover rights, but I know that many page movers use the WP:PAGESWAP script to semi-automate this process, so you might want to check that out (if you want to). InfiniteNexus (talk) 18:13, 10 October 2021 (UTC)
- @InfiniteNexus: Thanks for the link! I don't think this would work well for me, as I usually do round-robin moves when publishing drafts. The AfC helper script automatically does a lot (moves to mainspace, adds to Wikipedia:Articles for creation/recent, and notifies the author), and it seems impossible to automate both the AfC work and the round-robin move. Tol (talk | contribs) @ 18:17, 10 October 2021 (UTC)
- I see, I guess it's just up to you to decide whether you want to automate the round-robin move or AfC process. InfiniteNexus (talk) 18:20, 10 October 2021 (UTC)
- @InfiniteNexus: Yes. It would be useful for non-AfC round-robin swaps, but I haven't done any of those. Thanks, though! Tol (talk | contribs) @ 18:21, 10 October 2021 (UTC)

Paul Grima Mr. Cool Wikipedia Page
Dear Tol,
Thank you for helping me to write this page, I have been constantly updating the page for the last couple of days. Today I have made some more changes in line with what you recommended. The page is about a Maltese strongman who is quite well known here in Malta and who has been performing here for the last 30 years. He is a performing strongman similar to a circus strongman who performs feats fo strength shows which are always dedicated to charitable causes. I was looking at the page of Joe Greenstein (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Joe_Greenstein) who was also a performing strongman to get some ideas for Mr. Cool's page. What else would you advise me to add or remove for it to get accepted?
Best Regards,
Antfarmalta — Preceding unsigned comment added by Antfarmalta (talk • contribs) 13:46, 11 October 2021 (UTC)
- @Antfarmalta: Right now, I think the main problem with this draft (Draft:Mr. Cool (Paul Grima)) is its tone. Things like "all over the Maltese islands", "unconventional to say the least", and "and even ears" need to be reworded to be more neutral. Tol (talk | contribs) @ 16:01, 11 October 2021 (UTC)
- Thank you, I have made some extensive edits to the article today as advised. I will resubmit it shortly. Best regards, Antfarmalta — Preceding unsigned comment added by Antfarmalta (talk • contribs) 16:52, 11 October 2021 (UTC)

Thanks CeallaighM (talk) 20:51, 12 October 2021 (UTC)
- Hello @CeallaighM. The draft did not demonstrate notability. My apologies, but I am not comfortable editing in this topic area beyond content review and basic cleanup. Tol (talk | contribs) @ 20:57, 12 October 2021 (UTC)
- Seriously, the first person ever to be banned by a country via a hash in image coding is not newsworthy or notable... Okay, keep your wikipedia Karen... She may not be Notable to you, but to everyone in New Zealand, it made the news... — Preceding unsigned comment added by CeallaighM (talk • contribs) 21:08, 12 October 2021 (UTC)
- @CeallaighM: Wikipedia is not a newspaper, and please remember to stay civil. The decision to ban certain images could be added at Office of Film and Literature Classification. Tol (talk | contribs) @ 21:18, 12 October 2021 (UTC)
- You may feel uncomfortable with a subject on Wikipedia, that is your right, however... As she is the first person (possibly in the world) but definitely for the country of New Zealand, to have her images specifically labeled as Child Pornography and BANNED via isp hash technology, she meets the definition and criteria for "Subject-specific notability guidelines". This is the first person I have been able to find, where an ISP of a country takes hash encoding via https://archive.org/details/office-of-film-and-literature-classification_800392/page/n1/mode/2up Facial, video, voice recognition and BAN anyone from the country of New Zealand from seeing these images. It may not be the best subject in the world, it may involve things that make your skin crawl, but it is certainly news worthy and notable and that's what Wikipedia is. Wikipedia is not about feelings, it is about the world. I would urge you to reconsider, because you let your personal feelings cloud your judgement... CeallaighM (talk) 21:37, 12 October 2021 (UTC)
- @CeallaighM: My comment that "I am not comfortable editing in this topic area beyond content review and basic cleanup" was in response to your request to "help [you] make the article", not in reference to my decline. The draft has again been declined by a different reviewer. Please read the text in the grex box in the red box at the top of the draft for why it was declined, and read Wikipedia:Notability (people)#Basic criteria to see how to demonstrate notability. Tol (talk | contribs) @ 21:42, 12 October 2021 (UTC)
- I could add them all I want to the Office of Film and Literature Classification, the problem is, I would have another user like YOU that "doesn't feel comfortable" and decide since their is no wikipedia page for her, she isn't notable and therefore the Ban isn't notable. Just because a particular subject doesn't make YOU feel comfortable, doesn't mean it isn't notable. This is exactly what Jimbo started Wikipedia for...CeallaighM (talk) 21:42, 12 October 2021 (UTC)
- @CeallaighM: Again, I was referring to not being comfortable helping you with the draft. It is not relevant to notability and plays no part in my assessment of the draft. Tol (talk | contribs) @ 21:44, 12 October 2021 (UTC)

Category for automated tables
I suggest putting a category, or hidden category, on the table templates that update automatically. I, and others, would like to check them all out. --Timeshifter (talk) 23:46, 12 October 2021 (UTC)

How can I see OWID or JHU source data?
I am a newb at much of LibreOffice Calc. I have figured out a few things.
But I haven't figured out a way to view any of the source data at Github for OWID or JHU:

You can see for yourself by installing LibreOffice, and then opening the file with Calc. It is fairly quick to download and install that office suite.
I get this message before it opens the file: "The data could not be loaded completely because the maximum number of columns per sheet was exceeded." --Timeshifter (talk) 00:36, 15 October 2021 (UTC)
- @Timeshifter: I think you might be downloading the GitHub HTML page. After you open the file in GitHub (say total_deaths_per_million.csv), click on "raw" and download the plain-text page it opens. Then try that with Excel. Tol (talk | contribs) @ 17:42, 16 October 2021 (UTC)
