Fitna is an Arabic word for civil war, disagreement, division within Islam, trial, test, disturbance. The word also includes the idea of drawing someone away from God. It is often believed that having men and women in congregation together or having women as imams can be a cause of fitna and thus is used as a reason for its disallowance. But fitna can also have a positive connotation in the Quran such as can be interpreted from these two verses:

  • (11:64) "And my people, this is God's camel, in her you have (ayat) a sign. So leave her to eat from the land freely, and do not harm her, or else a close retribution will take you."
  • (54:27) We are sending the camel as a (Fitna) TEST for them. So observe them and be patient.

It is thus possible to get a dual picture of the word 'fitna'. The Quran Alone Muslims regard this an important issue un understanding sura 74 of the Quran and thereby what they call the mathematical miracle of the Quran.
