Hello, I hope you're doing fine and I sincerely apologize for this intrusion. My name's Claudi Balaguer (User Capsot from the Catalan Wikipedia and Occitan Wikiccionari), and sorry I'm not a Vulcan... I've just read your profile and I wasn't really able to figure out whether you're from Welsh descent or just using this name because you liked it. Well you seem to be a very interesting person (I wish that I could speak all the languages too...), interested in many things so I suppose you know what are a minorized language and culture and maybe I am not bothering you and you will help us... I'm a member of a Catalan association "Amical de la Viquipèdia" which is trying to get some recognition as a Catalan Chapter (an intermediate structure between the Wikipedias and the Wikimedia Foundation) but this hasn't been approved up to this moment because Catalan is not supported by a state even though our Association is working real hard. We would appreciate your support, visible if you stick this on your first page: Wikimedia CAT and/or sign the list of "Members and Supporters" that can be reached through the link inside the template. Hola, espero que mi inglés no haya sido tan malo... espero que ha sido sólo para que pudieras practicar un poco... Gracias por tu mensaje. Desde luego sí que existe una Viquipèdia y bueno funciona bastante bien. Lo que no tiene en cambio, es lo que se llama Chapter (si quieres más información puedes echar un vistazo a mi página de usuario), es decir una entidad intermedia entre la Viquipèdia i la Wikimedia Foundation. Por ejemplo esta acreditación te permite obtener un aspecto oficial para tractar con autoridades diversas, obtener subvenciones, liberar material en bibliotecas, archivos y realizar proyectos con más apoyo y oficialidad. Evidentemente nuestra asociación ya hace cosas pero nos resulta más difícil y complicado (y algunas no se podrán hacer) que si tuvieramos el sello oficial de la Wikimedia Foundation. Aparentemente sólo se quiere dar el estatuto de Chapter a entidades representativas de un estado (aunque existen un Chapter Nueva York y uno para Hong Kong... y que pasa si de repente el estado vecino te invade, pierdes tu Chapter?), pero si la Wikipedia tiene por base los idiomas dando de manera muy democrática a todos los locutores de cualquier idioma la posibilidad de crear una Wiki, porque a un nivel superior debe ser diferente? Si esto no cambia, además del catalá, muchísimas Wikipedias nunca tendrán un Chapter que les represente (lenguas minorizadas: vasco, bretón, occitano, gallego, retorománico, sardo, piemontés ... y también lenguas sin estado: esperanto, romani, ladino... o klingon!). Hi/hola again. Gracias por tu mensaje simpático. No te preocupes, tu español es bueno, sólo se deben mejorar una cosillas pero bueno lo conseguirás sin problemas... Te escribo español también ya que no tengo muchas oportunidades para practicarlo y bueno así voy practicando y además veo que te interesa practica este idioma asíi que: "No problemo!". De hecho todo es una región geográfica... la definición del Chapter es bastante ambigua y su aplicación a⌂n más, lo que entienden por "geographical region" es en realidad un estado soberano como España, Italia, Estados Unidos, México etc... Me alegro que sepas tantas cosas sobre Catalunya y la realidad catalanófona (vivo en la Catalunya del Nord y mis padres son valencianos...) y bueno a mi parecer no importa tanto la realidad estatal, o sea política, sino el hecho que la base de las Wikipedias son las lenguas y no los estados. No me parece mal que una lengua como el francés pueda gozar de diversos Chapters de "estado": Wikimedia France, Quebec... pero que se hará con el tibetano si tiene una Wikipèdia se supone que deberá depender de un Chapter chino? y qué hacer con los esperantistas que no tienen estado? y desde luego los catalanes y otros pueblos de Europa en situaciones similares... No digo que los Chapters de estado tengan malas intenciones hacia las lenguas minorizadas pero bueno en casos equivalentes en que se deba decidir de subvencionar un proyecto siempre se decidirá de ayudar la cosa que pueda alcanzar más gente (la lengua dominante entonces...) y no sé hasta que punto los locutores de un idioma dominante pueden llegar a defender uno de más débil... Ciao! Welcome... I am having fun correcting Spanish stuff lately (mostly format, when I feel active I also add history sections in city articles). Just some notes: Spanish kings names' should be in the English form (i.e.: Philip IV of Spain and not Felipe IV), as it's the one used for the articles name here. I also notice that sometimes there's confusion between cities and their provinces (many anglophones don't notice this distnction), and I try to correct this as possible. Greetings from the Guild of Copy Editors Backlog Elimination Drive!

GOCE September 2010 backlog elimination drive progress graphs

Participation report — We have 71 participants in the September drive. 95 people signed up for the July drive, and in May we had 36.

Progress report — We have been making solid progress in eliminating the 2008 articles from the backlog so far. If we continue to focus our firepower we can completely wipe out 2008 from the queue. Overall volumes are lower than expected though, with nearly a thousand articles yet to be done if we are to meet our overall target. If you have not yet participated in the drive, we recommend you do so. If each person who signed up edits one article per day from now till the end of the month we can eliminate another 1,065 articles from the backlog. All contributions are appreciated.

Announcement: credit for 10k+ articles — Participants editing a 10k word article may claim credit for two 5k+ articles on the leaderboard. Those that edit a 15k word article may claim credit for three. Regardless, the article is still counted as a single article in the tallies.

Reminder — Articles from the Requests page can be included in your tally, even if they do not have a copy edit tag. This is a great place to go if you are interested in finding a higher quality article to work on.

I've gone ahead with the move (no admin was needed as the redirect has only a one-edit history). Seems like a reasonable move to me to match the main article. To be honest, this is more of a translated name than anything else as the race has not received significant exposure in the English language yet. Thanks for the recommendation! Indeed! My chameleonic signature. I use the switch parser function to change the colour each time I sign. It's quite crafty. It's based on various colour changers I've seen on userpages. Ah, a graphical calculator, I take it you're a mathematician? Anyway, the parser functions aren't too complicated to use one you get the hang of them. Basically, the parser functions are designed to calculate or check something and the n out put the result. Most of the instructions are here. In particular, the switch function takes an expression that outputs a number, finds the parameter that matches the number and then uses the parameter value as the output. If it doesn't find anything, it outputs the default value. This is what it looks like.

Here it is set with mod 10, so it will values from 0-9, but this can be changed. In my case I use mod 68, giving me 68 different colours for my signature and that's pretty much it. That's one of the magic words. It gives the total number of edits made to this wiki at any given time. the R parameter means you get a raw number with commas, so it can used in functions. These are the parser functions. The #expr: function allows maths expressions to be calculated. So 1+1 gives 1+1, but {{#expr:1+1}} gives 2. The #switch: function will take the value and look for a match amongst the given options. When it find a match, it will display the item associated with the option. So in the case above, if {{#expr:{{NUMBEROFEDITS:R}} mod 10}} give out 0, then the item after the 0= will be displayed. There is an example of this here. They're quite straightforward to edit and use, one you get the hang of it. Not all templates are full of magic words and parser functions, there are some that only have text. It's usually best to make the edit when you see something that needs editing, just like with articles. I noticed that you've created a template. I've made a few additions and changes, mainly code based. Generally, user warning templates are worded in such a way that they don't use pronouns. So instead of:

Interesting. Why avoid pronouns? I understand avoiding "he" and "she" so as to be gender neutral, but why avoid "you"?
I'm trying to get more into template editing on this wiki because there are many templates on the simple wiki that need cleaning up for code, etc. My vandalism-reverting talents aren't much use over there, because the small amount of vandalism made to the simple wiki is caught and reverted too quickly for my computer to keep up. I still want to be useful, though, so I'm trying to learn more about templates over here. Once I'm pretty confident that I won't mess up the templates on simple wiki, I'll start helping out there. I'm not completely sure why, but I believe it's do to with not getting emotionally involved with vandals. Also, using "you" seems to imply pointing the finger at the editor being templated. It probably helps keep things calm here and prevent heated arguements. It seems to be the case on standard templates. It is calmer at SimpleWiki, sometimes I do help out with templates there myself. I suggest being bold when it come to editing templates. If you want, I could watch over your edits to templates just to make sure and correct you if you make a mistake. That makes sense. Also, I suppose if one were warning a shared IP, users of the IP that didn't vandalize would feel more like they were being blamed for something they didn't do.
I have noticed that it's a lot calmer over at simple. More relaxed, too.

Actually, I did three things. I added safesubst: to the magic words and parser functions, the icon parameter so that a custom icon can be chosen and the substcheck templates. The substcheck templates are equipped with code that will check for substitution and return an error if it hasn't been substituted. So

However, you forgot to warn the user who vandalized the page. In the future, please warn users who vandalize. They may not understand Wikipedia policy on vandalism and test editing, and they need to be informed. Old warnings also help people warning vandals for subsequent vandalism, because they need to know how many times the user has vandalized to give them the right level of warning. Safesubst will only substitute a template when the template above it is substituted. Considering the template above, if Template:uw-pleasewarn is transcluded then all the templates inside it that use safesubst will also be transcluded, but if Template:uw-pleasewarn is substituted then all the templates inside it that use safesubst will also be substituted. Not quite, that's premature substitution. It's the reason why I didn't put the safesubst directly when I added it to Template:uw-pleasewarn. It's actually because you wouldn't want the templates within the template to subst on transcluding the template. If you do, the result can be very messy. Transcluding User:Thesevenseas/Signature is an example of this happening. See User:Thesevenseas/Sandbox for the result. With safesubst you transclude or substitute all at once. It's a feature of the MediaWiki software. Substituting templates within a template is not carried out when the template is transcluded. In fact, it is this very feature that allows us to check whether a template is substituted or not. I have looked over your contributions to the templates namespace and it looks like you've got the hang of things. Keep it up! Warning templates

Hello to you Cymru lass. Thanks for the information on warning templates. As you'll no doubt be aware, I am not fully familiar with all aspects of disciplinary procedure and oly recently did I discover those templates. They are useful in that they alert other patrol users or admins that a certain individual has been warned but by nature they do not draw attention to the particular edit or page that has been vandalised. All I know is that whoever is issuing these warnings is doing so very quickly without typing out full passages, and my only method to date has been to copy an example and then paste it on the user's talk page. Like The Seven Seas said, Twinkle is pretty good. Basically, it puts a little menu at the top of the screen (to the right of the read and edit buttons). It will help you automatically add user warnings and a whole bunch of other things.

@ Evlekis - Basically, substitution copies all of the marked template code onto the page in such a way that it won't update when the template is updated. To substitute a template just use
{{subst:template}}
where template is the name of the template in question.

September 2010 Backlog Elimination Drive Conclusion

Greetings from the Guild of Copy Editors September 2010 Backlog Elimination Drive. Thanks to all who participated! Several of our top editors were called away to real life concerns during the month (be careful out there, people!). This meant that once again, we did not meet all our lofty targets, but we did come close.

Stats

  • Out of 76 registered editors, 45 actively participated.
  • We nearly wiped out the 2008 articles from the backlog—there were only 13 remaining when the drive closed.
  • We reduced the backlog by 725 articles (11.5%), so it was another successful drive.
  • A total of 59 barnstars will be awarded to 40 editors—well done, and congratulations to all.

I see what you mean. I do the same as well. In fact, there are these two templates to help sort out fragmented discussions. I usually tend to defragment conversations while they're still fresh and then let an archiving bot to the rest. It's usually easiest that way. I could set up one of the bots to archive your talk page if you still want a bot to carry out the task and you're having trouble setting it up. I have MiszaBot III set up on my talk page. Just look for the User:MiszaBot/config template near the top of the page. It might help you set up the bot for your talk page. Indeed there is! The archives can be sorted according to the months and years of each archived section. You just need to modify the archive parameter accordingly. For example, setting the archive parameter to User talk:Cymru.lass/%(monthname)s-%(year)d will give this.

Quick Bit Of Advice

I noticed that you nominated these two pages for deletion. In these cases, it possible to accelerate the deletion of theses pages via the criteria for speedy deletion rather than sending them to XfD, since this will probably result in a speedy delete anyway. Generally, it's best to use WP:CSD if it's obvious that a page should be deleted and there will be no opposition to its deletion. Hope this helps. I believe it comes under, A10 - Recently created article that duplicates an existing topic. However, I would think that this criteria would be mainly for the article space, but this seems to be the closest criteria. (I wrote this twenty minutes ago and then had all kinds of problems with my internet connection) I think you might have better luck submitting this question to a wider audience at Wikipedia:Media copyright questions. I looked at the first link and I think that it may fall under fair use as a work of satire. I attempted some searches and found some related material but nothing right on point. See e.g., User talk:Jimbo Wales/Archive 43#Improper use of the Wikipedia Logo. I have in the past emailed users who are using our copyrighted material without proper attribution under CC-BY-SA/the GFDL and have had success with getting them to voluntarily take down the material or place proper attribution. You could try asking yourself, though this is a bit different since the Wikimedia Foundation owns the copyright, as opposed to material from articles that is infringed, the copyright of which is owned by Wikipedia contributors. The problem with enforcing offsite copyright violations is that it's easy to ask but, ultimately, the only way to force removal is legal action. Hello again Cymru.lass. Thank you for the information on both accounts, informing me about people's behaviour on their own talk pages and the details on Twinkle. Just to clarify: I am British-born to parents who came from pre-1992 Yugoslavia, the Cyrillic script was and continues to be used down the east side of the former territory in the lands akin to where Orthodox Christians form a majority; that is my religion and background. To that end, I can speak, read and write Serbian, Macedonian and Bulgarian, all of which can be written in Cyrillic. I also have a reasonable knowledge of Ukrainian and Russian (and to a lesser extent, Belarussian) that are also Cyrillic script languages. Note one thing however, the term reading Cyrillic is complex. Unlike the Greek alphabet, it not used for one single language, neither is it used for languages of one single family. In fact after the Roman alphabet, Cyrillic is the second most widely used script in the world with regards number of languages (not users). If we are talking users, I think the Chinese script comes first; dominated mainly by the languages of China but also used for languages beyond. My point is that just as every language using the Roman script has its own orthography, so too is this the case with Cyrillic. And if you are familiar with Russian, just looking at some of the scripts used for languages formerly within the Soviet Union and those still spoken in Russia, you can barely recognise the Cyrillic shape of them. Unlike the Roman script which has 26 legal characters and a number of diacritics, there seems to be no restriction to any Cyrillic imports. This is how the South Slavic languages (esp Serbian) came to deploy /J/ directly from Latin; this way we can uphold a phonetical system of one grapheme per phoneme, so Russian/Bulgarian /ю/ became Serbian/Macedonian /ју/. Then there are basic differences, Russian /e/ is either pronounced "ye" (stressed) or "ee" (unstressed). So the pronunciation of my name in Russian would be "Ye-vli-ch'is" (the /i/ softening the /k/ that it follows). To demonstrate a near-correct guide to a Russian, I'd need to write /Євлъєкъис/. So what is your background? I've seen your user page, are you a Welsh girl? Or are you American to Welsh parents? I'm particularly interested in the Cymru forming part of your user name. Cuiously enough, yes I am very enthusiastic about all languages but the few I listed are all closely related and knowledge of one surmises certain knowledge of the others. It is also a coincidence that I happen to be in Wales now as I write this; last night when you posted the above message I was at work - in England - but I have come to Chepstow for the day because I love it here. In this town, you will not hear any Welsh and most of the people tend to have some English connection. So you're of 57 backgrounds and Welsh is one of them. I admit it's an interesting language too, more remote from English than Spanish and the Slavic languages I named that are written in Cyrillic. Seems hard to believe but when you examine the Welsh language, you see how different it is. So how do you come to know Spanish? I'm now trying to learn it and I am very fortunate that this is one language on which you can obtain a Michel Thomas course, I swear by them, as he was the world's finest language teacher. My mother's been speaking Spanish since she was 17, and I grew up hearing her speak Spanish while talking to patients on the phone (she's a doctor), so I've always had a little basic knowledge of Spanish. I got really serious about learning it once I began high school. I really want to go into linguistics; it's a subject area that fascinates me. By the way, since you're in Wales, you simply must go to the Wales Millennium Centre and Roald Dahl Plass (they're right next to each other). Linguistics is a great interest of mine too, and you're in the right place: Wikipedia is a good starting block for this topic. I'm sorry I didn't go to those places but I was only in Chepstow across the Severn Bridge from where I live. I see more of Cardiff when I look across the Bristol Channel from Weston-Super-Mare. I'm not too sure. One of the things I do is standardisation of templates and their documentation, like Template:Current daylight saving offset documentation and Template:File deletion template notice, which hold common documentation for several templates. If you find more templates where Template:File deletion template notice can be used, you can transclude it onto the relevant documentation subpages. There are examples under "see also" at Template:File deletion template notice. Something slightly easier you could do is look out for templates with documentation that isn't on a subpage. You can then move the documentation to the subpage. An example of this can be seen at Template:SD warn-needed and Template:SD warn-needed/doc where I moved the documentation from the former to the latter. On another note, I noticed that your edit here caused a template loop! However, it wasn't quite your fault. I've already sorted it out, it's fine now. You may also want to take a look at Category:Wikipedia template cleanup. Not all templates are full of magic words and parser functions, there are some that only have text! Here are Template:Generic Merit Badge and Template:Fictional animal category, two templates where the documentation is on the template page rather than the documentation subpage. Good job! The rationale behind moving documentation to subpages is so that it can still be edited when the template itself is protected. Funny you should ask that! I was just dealing with something to do with cascading protection earlier today! Basically, cascade protecting a page will fully protect the page and extend that full protection to all the templates transcluded on that page. For example, if your user talk page was fully protected with the cascading option then the following templates would also be fully protected: Template:divbox, Template:editor review, Template:archive banner, Template:talkback, Template:talkback, Template:uw-pleasewarn and of course Template:=) . This because they're all transcluded on your talk page. This option is used so that all of the visible content on a page can be restricted from editing. You can read about it here. I'm not a professional mathematician, but I am very mathematically minded—I was doing high-school algebra and geometry in fourth and fifth grade. As far as magic words and parser functions, I'm a bit fuzzy. I know what magic words are, but don't have any memorized, outside of __TOC__ __NOTOC__ __FORCETOC__ __NOINDEX__ {{CURRENTYEAR}} {{CURRENTMONTH}} {{CURRENTTIMESTAMP}} {{REVISIONUSER}} {{NUMBEROFPAGES}} and a couple of pagename ones. As for parser functions, I'm not just fuzzy, I'm trying to see with my contacts out They befuddle me. I understand their purpose, I can just never keep the specific uses in my head. I did do a sort of am-I-likely-online test-thing (checking time and day of the week), which is transcluded at the top of this page from User:Cymru.lass/Sandbox. (I can never remember to update my status otherwise; 99% of the time it's at around.) But that thing took me several hours. Help with understanding parser functions would be appreciated. That's brilliant! If you can do that then you're well on your way to understanding magic words and parser functions. It took me a while to get my head around it! It works well for weekdays, however for the weekend it will report you as online 8:00-15:00 and as at school 0:00-8:00 and 15:00-24:00! . This is because the first value gives 1, the second value gives 0, the ifeq compares the two reporting a mismatch and saying you're at school. Anyway, this is what I gather from what I see. Firstly this is the code used.

I can't read or understand Arabic and Hindi, but if I'm given a written-out (i.e., in the Roman alphabet) transliteration, I can do a passable accent. I pick up accents really easily—which isn't always a good thing.
