"Yankees Suck" is a chant commonly used by Boston Red Sox fans at Fenway Park in Boston, Massachusetts. The chant was begun by Red Sox fans to cheer against their arch rival New York Yankees in pressure situations.
The chant is frequently noticeable; when it occurs, it can be heard faintly on TV and at times can echo all the way across the Charles River. Typically the chant will begin when the Yankees are playing in Fenway Park and losing significantly, although by and large the score is irrelevant to when the chants start--often they start after the very first pitch of the game. However, the jeer has recently experienced increased usage unrelated to its initial intent, as some fans will now chant "Yankees Suck" against a team other than the Yankees and during other sporting events besides baseball, a notable example being a "Yankees Suck" chant during the 2002 New England Patriots' Super Bowl victory parade (which was started by linebacker Larry Izzo), and even to non-sporting events such as weddings and bar mitzvahs.
This added element of randomness is similar to the history of the "Potvin sucks" taunt heard at New York Rangers hockey games; originally directed at Denis Potvin, it was eventually chanted against opponents other than the rival New York Islanders. The tradition continues, decades after Denis Potvin's retirement.
Zakk Wylde of Black Label Society and Ozzy Osbourne's guitarist even started a "Yankees Suck" chant at the Boston date of OzzFest 2005 on the second stage with Rob Zombie.
The exact origin of the chant is hard to pin down. In a 1993 Boston Globe article, Nick Cafardo said that it had been "revived" and referred to it as "the chant that had been missing here for so long". [1].
Members of the Boston sports media such as Bob Ryan and Dan Shaughnessy have written that the chant is an embarrassment to the city and should be abandoned.
"Yankees Suck" has been extensively merchandised through street vendors and web sites. Merchandise includes the common blue and white T-shirts, bumper stickers and flags. Trying to create a more "family-friendly atmosphere," any merchandise bearing "Yankees Suck" or something along those lines, is banned by Fenway officials. [2] Violators (specifically those wearing offending t-shirts) are frequently threatened with ejection and possible arrest if they refuse to turn the offending shirt inside-out. Additionally, chanting or shouting "Yankees Suck" at Fenway Park can also warrant ejection and/or arrest.
The chant is also common to New York Mets fans in New York City. [3]
