== Match Fishing ==

Competition or "Match Fishing" is a sport in the United Kingdom and all across Europe to a lesser extent. The main countries competing in the world championships which are held anually are listed [http://www.portugalfishing2006.com/RESULTS/FINAL_COURSE_MEN.pdf in the 2006 world championship results]

The sport of angling itself is the highest participation sport in the UK today Lord Moynihan in 2003 confirmed in parliment that "Angling has the highest participation of any sport in the United Kingdom. Sea angling alone has in excess of 1 million regular participants" [http://www.publications.parliament.uk/pa/ld200304/ldhansrd/vo031217/text/31217-10.htm UK Parliment extracts] and coarse angling has an estimated 3.5 million regular participants. Match angling is a small section of the angling community, with anglers taking part in competitions regularly estimated again at around 250,000 on a weekly basis.

Match fishing is normally on a weekend and can vary between 10 and 200 anglers on any one fishing match, occassionally larger competitions take place where anglers organise themselves into teams of normally 10 anglers and compete against other teams, these are held annually and teams of anglers organised into divisions accross the country - these matches amoungst others are organised by the NFA (National Federation of Anglers)[http://www.nfadirect.com/ NFA]Fishing matches and competitions are always decided on the total weight of fish caught during a specified amount of time, in the UK this would normally be 5 hours - for example between 10am and 3pm.

Carp are the main species of fish in the UK and a whole new industry has sprung up over the last 3 years with land owners capitalising on the growth of the sport, many farmers have dug ponds and small lakes which can allow anglers to catch very large numbers of fish [http://www.talkangling.co.uk/Bowsaws.htm See the picture here of a typical catch of carp from a UK stillwater]

The largest match fishing competition is called "FishoMania" and has a £25,000 first prize with a live televised final shown on Sky TV every year, anglers pay £20 per ticket to enter qualifying heats and the heat winners go forward to the live televised final.

Match Fishing in winter is a far more technical sport as when the water temperature drop fish become much harder to catch as the naturally eat less, fish will also shole up in certain areas of lakes and rivers where water may be slightly warmer or a natural spring occurrs.

Many people refer to angling as "Not a sport - just luck" well this certainly is not the case if you are involved in the sport at the highest levels, technical ability and tactics all contribute to the number of fish and size of fish an angler can catch from a given lake or river - [http://www.talkangling.co.uk/Features.htm Read the detailed articles and see how top match anglers can catch more fish by using various tactics] its not just about turning up and wetting a line, there are hundreds of different methods and baits to consider - this only comes from experience and from this you should be able to dismiss the myth that angling is mearly down to luck!

Template:Linkless Troutmasters is the name of an annual fishing tournament taking place in the Wilson's Creek district of Pisgah National Forest in Western North Carolina. The invitation only tournament takes place on the opening day of trout fishing season, normally the first Saturday in April. Entrants may begin fishing at exactly 6am on Saturday morning. Wilson's creek is stocked by the North Carolina Fish Hatcheries division of N.C Game and Wildlife Commission. The river is stocked with Rainbow, Brook, and Brown trout.

Unlike most fishing tournaments which judge by weight of catch, Troutmasters fish are judged by length from tip to tail. By catching the longest fish, the Troutmasters winning fisherman is awarded ownership of the coveted Troutmasters trophy until the next tournament. The trophy is engraved with the names of previous winners.

Other traditions unique to the tournament include the Mezcal opening ceremony, taking place on the Thursday evening prior to the Saturday fishing tournament. The ceremony begins with a reading of "The Mystique of Mezcal", followed by a sampling of the liquor. Tournament participants may also elect to read a short passage of their own.

In more recent years, A horseshoe tournament has been added to the weekend's festivities. "The Golden Horseshoe" tournament is comprised of two-man teams, competing in "best of three" matches. The tournament uses a double elimination format, with the championship match normally taking place on Saturday afternoon.
