Te Kaha is a small New Zealand community situated in the Bay of Plenty near Opotiki.
The New Zealand Ministry for Culture and Heritage gives a translation of "the rope" for Te Kaha.[1]
The local population consist of the predominant iwi of the area known to be Te-Whānau-Ā-Apanui. There are four marae in the area as the following: Waiōrore; Tūkāki; Maungaroa; Pāhaoa. Te Kaha is a little outpost that contains a couple of dairies and the Te Kaha resort. The full name of The Kaha is Te-Kahanui-A-Tikirākau.
Demographics
Te Kaha and its surrounds had a population of 387 at the 2013 New Zealand census, an increase of 84 people since the 2006 census. There were 204 males and 183 females.[2] 24.2% were European/Pākehā, 83.3% were Māori, 0.8% were Pacific peoples and 3.3% were Asian.[3]

Te Kura o Te Whanau-a-Apanui is a coeducational composite (years 1-13) school with a roll of 177 students as of August 2024.[4][5] The school opened in 2016 to replace three East Cape schools,[6] and is presently in Ōmaio while premises are being built in Te Kaha.[7]
