Shoshana Rosenbaum is an American filmmaker based in Washington, D.C. Her films use magical realism, science fiction and horror to explore alternate realities and gender dynamics.

Career

[edit]

Her first short film, The Goblin Baby is a supernatural thriller about the first year of motherhood. Film journalist Heidi Honeycutt called the film “a grown-up meditation for all the women who grew up watching Labyrinth.” In her review of the film, Lauren Humphries-Brooks called it a: “tense, sharply edited film, packed tight with meaning in its fifteen minute run time,” and commended how it “walks the line between the supernatural and the psychological.”[1] Phil W. Bayles praised the film for addressing postpartum depression, calling it “a great little psychological horror film to boot.”[2] In Nightmarish Conjurings, Craig Thayer called it “a slim and effective little psychological chiller that is worth a view.”[3] IndieWire named The Goblin Baby its Project of the Day on January 23, 2014.[4] It won Best Narrative Short, Best Visual Effects and Best Sound Design at the Indie Capitol Awards as well as the Rosebud Award (Top 5 film) at the Rosebud Film Festival. The film played at festivals across the U.S. and internationally, including screenings in the U.K., Germany and Australia. Shoshana was designated an Associate Artist at the Digital Institute for Education on Parenthood (DIEP), which honors “professional contemporary artists who have made important work in response to their own pregnancy, birth and/or new parenthood journeys.” DIEP artists “are based all over the world and their work spans the visual, performing, literary, film and digital disciplines.”[5]

Shoshana expanded The Goblin Baby story into the feature script At The Edge Of The Woods, which she developed at the Attic Lab, a lab for female genre filmmakers at Stranger With My Face Film Festival in Hobart, Australia, and at Stowe Story Labs. Shoshana wrote about her experience at Stowe Story Labs in Script Magazine.[6] The script was optioned by AMP Productions and director Danishka Esterhazy was attached.

Shoshana’s second short film, Hide And Seek is an alternate reality tale about a rock musician turned stay-at-home dad. The short film was made with a 75% female crew, with women in many key crew roles, including writer/director, producer, and director of photography. The script had a staged reading as a finalist in the DC Asian Pacific American Film Festival, and was also a finalist in the Hollyshorts Film Festival Screenplay Competition. The film’s festival run included the DC Independent Film Festival, Cindependent Film Festival, and All Star Comic Con. We Are Moving Stories interviewed Shoshana about the film.[7]

Shoshana’s short film Night Waking, a domestic sci-fi thriller, won Best Sci-Fi Film at Sick Chick Flicks Film Festival and Best Mom-Themed Film at the MOM Film Fest. In Morbidly Beautiful, Stephanie Malone wrote:  "I was mesmerized by this stunning short.”[8] The film was nominated for Best Sci-Fi/Fantasy Short and Best Poster at GenreBlast Film Festival, as well as Best of Fest and Best Cinematography at Frankly Film Festival. It played at festivals across the U.S. and internationally, including in Iceland, Germany, and India.

Current Work

[edit]

In 2021, Shoshana was chosen by filmmakers Adam Egypt Mortimer and Jordan Crucchiola to be part of the inaugural cohort of the Destroy All Boundaries Directing Mentorship[9], during which she began to develop her first feature film project, based on the feature script The Other You by Julie Gold. Shoshana and Julie developed the script further at Story Stowe Labs. They won the Honfleur Women in Arts grant to produce the film.[10][11]

The film has a female writer, director, producers and cinematographer, and overall featured a 70% female crew. It will have its festival premiere in early 2025.

In 2021, Shoshana was named DC Filmmaker of the Month by the Office of Cable Television, Film, Music, and Entertainment.[12]
