Cole has been the play-by-play announcer for Hockey Night in Canada, primarily for Toronto Maple Leafs games, since 1969. He was a recipient of the Hockey Hall of Fame's Foster Hewitt Memorial Award for broadcasting excellence in 1996. As of 2004, he is not a member of the Hockey Hall of Fame itself. Cole is also a former curler, playing in the 1971 and 1975 Briers as the skip for the Newfoundland team. He also played in the 1973 Canadian mixed championships.
