Robert McQuillin BSC MSC FGS FRSE, born 1935 in Brampton Cumbria, scientist and author.
From 1957 until 1985 Robert worked for the British Geological Survey (BGS), formerly know as the Institute of Geological Sciences. In 1966 he was selected to set up a Marine Geophysics Unit in the Institute of Geological Sciences (which incorporated the former Geological Survey of Great Britain). This group was created to conduct a regional geophysical survey of the United Kingdom Continental Shelf and was subsequently responsible for the discovery and evaluation of the majority of the United Kingdom's oil and gas reserves. In 1973 Robert was appointed Head of the Marine Geophysics Unit, a post which he held for ten years until 1983 when he was appointed Deputy Director of the BGS. In 1985 he left BGS to join Britoil as their Chief Scientist and was kept on by BP when they bought Britoil in 1988. In 1991, having left BP, Robert formed Hydrocarbons Management International where he remained Chairman and Managing Director until he retired in 2010.
