Church of Bzyb

Church of Bzyb is a church in Georgia, in Autonomous Republic of Abkhazia, village of Bzyb.
Historical-architectural description
The church of Bzyb fortress is a domed structure of “cross-in-square” type with three projecting apses and is dated to the second half of the 9th c. Its walls are faced with hewn stone, doors and windows are adorned with the terminations. To the east of the church, remains of an older church are visible. Bzipi fortress consisted of two parts. The old road crossed the courtyard of the lower part. The fortress would lock the Bzyb gorge and a pass over the river. Rectangular and semi-circular towers, buttresses and a porch were embodied in the fortress enclosure built of well hewn limestone Quadra.
Current condition
The territory is currently occupied by Russia, because of which it is impossible to study and to conduct the appropriate works. But we have information that, the church and fortress are in poor physical condition. The church has become complete destruction.
Bzipi church has been given the status of culture heritage monument.
