History
The history of Jharsa dates back to medieval times.
During British colonial rule
The paragana of Badshahpur-Jharsa was ruled by Begum Samru (b.1753 – d.1836) and she built a palace for herself between Badshahpur and Jharsa.[2] Her palace has been completely lost to encroachments. Palace building is located between Gurgaon and Jharsa village, much of which was used as district collector's residence or camp office. Built in Islamic style, the ruins of this palace survived till about 2008 in Gurgaon.[3]
During 1857 War of Independence several freedom fighter from Jharsa took part. Bhakhtawar Singh Thakran (first President of Jharsa 360 khap) was the first martyr from Jharsa and Galam Singh Kilhore (president of Jharsa 365 khap) also led his khap against British Raj.
Before the 1947 Partition of India, Jharsa had a significant Muslim population. Pashtuns, who settled here from Rohilkhand and Delhi after the 1857 War of Independence, constituted the majority. Chughtai Mughals from Delhi and Syeds from Ajmer also found refuge here. The latter were granted lands by the last Mughal emperor Bahadur Shah Zafar. The village heroes were Ch. Galam Singh Kilhore and Ch. Bakhtawar Singh Thakran, who were hanged to death by the British government for the killing of two English officers in 1857.
Indian National Army (INA) led by Subhash Chandra Bose had several freedom fighters from Jharsa who fought in World War II against the British Raj in Burma, Singapore and Thailand to liberate India. These freedom fighters include Captain Uday Singh Kilhore (1912-1972) in whose honor the road from Rajiv Chowk to District Soldier Board is named.
Ramlila in Jharsa
Purani Ramlila, continuously held every year since 1880, is the oldest Ramlila in Gurugram. A sadhu devotee of Lord Shri Krishna, "Jugaldas", who came from a Hindu Jat family of the village, completed the construction of "Shri Krishan Mandir" in 1813 during the during the rule of Begum Samru when Jharsa had a muslim majority population. He started the Ramila on the temple grounds in 1879. Only other Ramlila in Gurugram at that time was organised by the Nawab of Pataudi State. In 1880 "Shri Krishan Mandir Ramlila" was moved to "Ram Talab" (Now Shahid Bakhtawar Singh Community Center) location by Munim ji (title), where it ran for 90 years before splitting into two separate Ramlila groups, one that moved to Chhota School in 1970 and other was moved at its original location at the ground of "Shri Krishan Mandir" at Jharsa in 1980. Thus The Ramlila of Jharsa completed 139 years. Jharsa's Ramlila was the oldest Ramlila of Gurugaon District. Purani Ramlila 138 Years (Estd. 1880), Nai Ramlila (Estd 1970) was 48 years and Shri Krishan Mandir Ramlila at the ground of Shri Krishan Mandir completed 39 Years (Estd 1980). All credit goes to Baba Jugal Das (Krishan Mandir Jharsa) who started Ramlila in Jharsa village.
