J.M.I. Recordings is a New York-based jazz record company and label founded by J. Cohn and Steven Mandel in 2016. The label specializes in recording, mixing, and mastering solely in analog.[1] J.M.I. has released over 25 albums.
History
[edit]In 1996, Steven Mandel became a music industry professional with an assistant engineer position at Electric Lady Studios in New York. In 2004, Mandel went to Philadelphia, where he became the personal engineer for Ahmir “Questlove” Thompson, following The Roots to Late Night with Jimmy Fallon in 2009 then The Tonight Show with Jimmy Fallon in 2014. Cohn co-founded jazz label Brown Brothers Recordings with David Elkins in 2004, which released 2 albums.
Since the 1990’s, founders Cohn and Mandel amassed large collections of vintage and new jazz vinyl LPs by labels such as CTI Records, ECM Records, SteepleChase Records, Black Saint/Soul Note, and WATT Records.[2]
J.M.I. Recordings was founded by Cohn and Mandel in summer 2016, after Cohn asked Mandel to form a new jazz label to create a contemporary discography in the tradition of these labels. Cohn is the primary investor and Mandel produces the LPs. In 2017, Cohn and Mandel brought in limited partner, engineer David Slitzky.
In August 2024, the label hosted 3-night live improvisation at the Blue Note Jazz Club, with David Murry, Questlove, and Raymond Angry, the "Plumb" album trio.[3]
