Welcome from Redwolf24

[edit]

Welcome!

Hello, and welcome to Wikipedia. Thank you for your contributions. I hope you like the place and decide to stay. We as a community are glad to have you and thank you for creating a user account! Here are a few good links for newcomers:

Yes some of the links appear a bit boring at first, but they are VERY helpful if you ever take the time to read them.

Remember to place any articles you create into a category so we don't get orphans.

I hope you enjoy editing here and being a Wikipedian! By the way, please be sure to sign your name on Talk and vote pages using four tildes (~~~~) to produce your name and the current date, or three tildes (~~~) for just your name. If you have any questions, see the help pages, add a question to the village pump or ask me on my Talk page. Again, welcome.

Roddy Llewellyn

[edit]

I noticed you listed Roddy Llewellyn as a candidate for speedy deletion. Fair enough, but a quick google search on the name would have turned up a bit about him that couldn't be gleaned from the article text. I'm just now stubbing it. Hope that's okay with you. Sounds great. Based on what was written, I thought he was just some gardener. Didn't know he was a famous gardener. :)--Howcheng 21:08, 1 August 2005 (UTC)[reply]

opinion needed

[edit]

Hello, I noticed you made an edit to Philip J. Klass. I put up NPOV on the article. Could you give an opinion as to the NPOV? Thank you, Bubba73 03:40, August 3, 2005 (UTC)

Mr. Monk and the Wikipedia MoS

[edit]

Thanks for doing some formatting on Mr. Monk and the Other Detective. If I might make a suggestion, could you please use sentence capitalization for article headings, per Wikipedia:Manual of Style#Headings? In other words, the heading "Plot Synopsis" should be "Plot synopsis". Thanks for your help here. ~ Jeff Q (talk) 23:40, 3 August 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Rent-a-Husband

[edit]

I saw your vote on Wikipedia:Votes_for_deletion/Rent-a-Husband and agree it looked bad, but Rent-a-Husband is a real movie that stars Brooke Shields, Maria Grazia Cucinotta and Chevy Chase. I rewrote the article into a stub, so you might want to take another look. DS1953 02:15, August 12, 2005 (UTC)

Nice work. I changed my vote. --Howcheng 15:32, 12 August 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Surrender of Japan

[edit]

Thanks for the compliment, but you're looking at another user's work. My contribution was a paragraph or two, but someone else was in the process of writing an article (offline) and posted it after I made a small expansion of the article. Much better than I would have done in a month, let alone during the few days that Votes for Deletion allows! Thanks for taking an interest in the article. Fg2 06:46, August 16, 2005 (UTC)

SoCal WikiProject

[edit]

Since you are in Southern California, you might be interested in the Southern California WikiProject (and its parent California WikiProject). Please take a look a look at the project and see if there is anything that interests you. If you have any questions, please contact me.

On a related subject, I noticed on your user page that you were interested in MLS players. Awhile back I edited the player rosters for the two LA MLS teams, adding diacritics to their names if that was the way that the were spelled in the articles on them on the team's websites. I was immediately reverted. Apparently two of the editors who do most of the editing on MLS articles have decided, without any publicity or discussion with other Wikipedia editors, that any MLS player with US citizenship, even those who were born outside the US, should absolutely not have their names spelled with diacritics, either for the titles of the Wikipedia articles on them or for player rosters (even if the diacritics are only after the "pipe" and not the article title). I would be interested in knowing your opinion on this. BlankVerse 09:23, 23 August 2005 (UTC)[reply]

see C.D. Chivas USA page history and Talk:C.D. Chivas USA for the discussion. The long list of players on the MLS website has NO diacritics for any player. I couldn't find anything that seemed to be an "official" roster, and I couldn't find anyway to contact the MLS to clarify matters. BlankVerse 04:29, 24 August 2005 (UTC)[reply]
Aarón López was born in Zapote de Parras, Michoacán. His birth certificate almost certainly had the diacritics. The non-accented name at UCLA can easily be explained away by lazy and/or clueless athletic staff members and sports reporters. Aarón probably appreciated joining C.D. Chivas USA, with staff members who cared about the diacritics and knew how to enter them on the computer, so that his name was restored to its original spelling. Even though he is now a US citizen, I think that his name should still be spelled with the diacritics. That's the way that it is on his page at C.D. Chivas USA ([1]—in the text of the article, not the infobox, where nobody's name is spelled with a diacritic). My personal opinion is that the names should be spelled the way that person wants to spell it currently, no matter how it was spelled in the past. BlankVerse 03:44, 25 August 2005 (UTC)[reply]
I liked your description of the soccer rivalries that you added to Los Angeles Galaxy, especially when compared to the hyperventilation that the anon wrote over in the Major rivalries article. If I had tackled the addition, it probably would have been written in ultra-cynic mode and been one of my rare violations of NPOV. BlankVerse 16:09, 29 August 2005 (UTC)[reply]

CA Historical Landmarks

[edit]

I've made a few small style changes to the page in progress. I'm not sure when I'll get back to working on this, but I'll probably start from the end of the alphabet unless I get ambitious and tackle L.A. County. Mike Dillon 05:02, August 27, 2005 (UTC)

[edit]

Yes, a number of navigation templates have been deleted on TFD because they consisted of numerous redlinks. So there is currently an unwritten etiquette rule to not add an article until it has been created. However, infoboxes are a different story... Zzyzx11 (Talk) 05:38, 17 September 2005 (UTC)[reply]

The Greatest Show On Earth

[edit]

Thanks for the update on the Premier League. When I first read it I suspected it was a marketing slogan, similar to the one used for hockey by the NHL in North America (The Coolest Game In The World). I was unable to find a reference for it but the original sentence was too POV. Cheers. CambridgeBayWeather 07:07, 1 October 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Someone wants to convert this to a template so it wound up at Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/List of California State Routes BTW this user was probably making a WP:POINT when he did this as he kept removing the TFD from {{WV Highways}}. --Rschen7754 05:30, 2 October 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Howcheng! I noticed this nomination, and thought I'd have a crack at improving it. I have rewritten the article from a cruise review to a cruise ship article. I am not entirely sure if the ships notability is great enough (my personal view is that cruise ships are inherently notable enough for articles, although I understand that many may disagree with me there), but I'd appreciate another look at it. AFD

[edit]

Thanks for your comments Howcheng, the things you reference are guidelines, not policy. No part of AFD policy mentions notability. I think it is important to follow policy, I will, however, take another look at those articles. My comment primarily concerned the nomination though. I think it is important that poeple nominating something for deletion list a valid reason! Cheers! Trollderella 19:45, 20 October 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Theodor Curtius

[edit]

Would you please be so kind as to remove the Speedy Deletion notice from Theodor Curtius. It is explained on its talk page why your suggestion is erroneous. Wim van Dorst 21:43, 21 October 2005 (UTC).[reply]

Hi Howcheng. Further to your suggestion at Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/Tourette's Guy, I've also tagged Tourettes guy for deletion - just thought I'd let you know in case you wanted to vote there too... Regards, CLW 16:12, 23 October 2005 (UTC)[reply]

You noted that this listing had been orphaned (and I see how I forgot to put in the pg= parameter in the template), but there were five votes before your comment, so I'm wondering how they got there, especially as they're from users who are known to frequent AFD. I doubt they'd have found it just by accident... strange. Anyway, thanks for listing it properly. --howcheng [ talk • contribs • web ] 00:03, 26 October 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Advertising vs Information

[edit]

Sorry for the deletion of your comments on Avotone, I am new to Wikipedia and it will not happen again. I am just curious, what constitutes advertising vs. factual information? The article posted is written in a manner that is factual and informative for people looking for information about Avotone. True L’Oreal is more 'noticeable' than Avotone, but should that really matter? At what level do you become 'noticeable'? I commend you for your watchful eye over the information being posted on Wikipedia, but if L’Oreal can have a page, so should other companies, no matter what the size. If there is a problem with the facts posted on the Avotone page, I can understand, but there are thousands of people who have purchased Avotone products and they may want to know more information about Avotone and the history of the company.

Why is the article:Malevolent Alien Abduction Research being deleted ?

[edit]

Why is that ? I'm also having a UFO Abductee look into this, and give his opinions as to make a sick article better. The intent of this is to provide information to people who has had a really nasty experience to report this without the often obscenity laced ridicule and/or insults, for people conducting research into these types of encounters. I hope I did'nt offend you.Martial Law 05:33, 27 October 2005 (UTC) :)[reply]

Done this. Reason is that it may serve as a source of information to both report hostile, often grisly alien encounters without the often obscenity laced ridicule, abuse and to provide a source of info. for sci-fi writers, etc.Martial Law 07:14, 27 October 2005 (UTC) :)[reply]

Hi howcheng,

Thanks for your message. Here is the recent deletion record of the article :

  • 16:30, 28 October 2005 Mailer diablo deleted "Meade Skelton" (db-repost)
  • 08:38, 27 October 2005 RHaworth deleted "Meade Skelton" (repost - see Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/Meade Skelton)
  • 16:52, 26 October 2005 Jni deleted "Meade Skelton" (repost of VfD deleted material)

In this case, I strongly recommend that you submit a Deletion review instead, as the AfD included votes from users citing non-notability and to address the repost clause.

Fisker

[edit]

Howcheng, you have proposed Fisker for deletion. I have reworded the article. I also took the liberty to rename it to Fisker Coachbuild. I respectfully submit that your statement "New automobile company that hasn't launched any products yet." is not correct since two models seem to have been shown at the 2005 Frankfurt Motor SHow. You may wish to review your introductory statement. My purpose is not to lobbying you, but just to inform you of the update. Thanks. --Edcolins 09:18, 30 October 2005 (UTC)[reply]

In response to your comments on my user talk page, by in its own page, do you mean that I provide a frame that is consistently used, or do you mean that I just always use the same target, so it'll pop-up the first time and change the same page for future edits? I use Opera, so once it opens up, I just hit the 1 key and it moves back to the nominations listing, and I can make sure my vote was posted correctly later. Welcome to Esperanza!

[edit]

Welcome, Holly Cheng/Archive1, to Esperanza, the Wikipedia member association! As you might know, all the Esperanzians share one important goal: the success of this encyclopedia. Within that, we then attempt to strengthen the community bonds, and be the "approachable" side of the project. All of our ideals are held in the Charter, the governing document of the association.

Now that you are a member, you might be interested in some of our programs. A quite important program is the StressUnit, which seeks to support editors who have encountered any stress from their Wikipedia events, and are seeking to leave the project. So far, Esperanza can be credited with the support and retention of several users. A spam list is maintained by Redwolf24 to keep members up to date; you might want to consider adding your name to the list. Also, we have a calendar of special events, member birthdays, and other holidays that you can add to and follow.

In addition to these projects, several more missions of Esperanza are in development, and are currently being created at Esperanza/Possibles.

I encourage you to take an active voice in the running of Esperanza. We have a small government system, headed by our Administrator general, Essjay, and guided by the Advisory Committee comprised of myself, Flcelloguy, Ryan Norton, and Acetic Acid. The next set of elections will be at the end of the year, and I would be glad to see you vote, or even consider running for a position.

If you have any other questions, concerns, comments, or general ideas, Esperanzian or otherwise, know that you can always contact me via email or talk page. Alternatively, you could communicate with fellow users via our IRC channel, #wikipedia-esperanza (which is also good for a fun chat or two :). I thank you for joining Esperanza, and look forward to working with you in making Wikipedia a better place to be!

nn-band

I notice that you and some others have expressed that there should be a speedy tag for obvious nn bands and I could not agree more. Is there anything being done on this? What do you think of an nn-band template? Cheers. PJM 14:36, 3 November 2005 (UTC)[reply]

AfD nominators

[edit]

G'day Howard,

thanks for your note (that was fast!). Hmm, that note on the main AfD page is new. I didn't notice it last time I nominated anything (admittedly, it's been a while). I was told (not long before you replied) that the practice arose because certain admins weren't counting the nomination as a full-bore vote. Frankly, this strikes me as exceedingly obnoxious: it's the nominator's job to put up a convincing case for deletion, not to vote himself. Oh, well.

Thanks for pointing this out to me. --fuddlemark (fuddle me!) 20:33, 3 November 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Apologies for falling silent, despite your reply. I tend to forget things if I don't get onto them pretty quickly. If you're interested in the rest that User:Chairboy and I have had to say, please see User talk:Chairboy#Nominator AFD voting. Cheers, fuddlemark (fuddle me!) 18:46, 8 November 2005 (UTC)[reply]

List of Jewish Fellows of the Royal Society is another pointless list that has sprung up like the French and Russian Academy of Jews lists.
