Category:CS1 errors: unsupported parameter
Hi Oculi
Please can you not run Category:CS1 errors: unsupported parameter through Citation bot?
The bot removes unrecognised parameters, whereas many of them can be fixed. See e.g. [1]
There are typos in parameter name, and non-English-language parameter names which the bot cannot fix, but which my AWB script can fix. I try to run it twice per day, but today it has had nothing to do because Citation bot has removed the params. BrownHairedGirl (talk) • (contribs) 18:54, 30 December 2021 (UTC)
CO2
I noticed that you have systematically replaced {{CO2}}
with the HTML form. Unfortunately this is not a benefit to Wikipedia. Recently, the {{cite}}
family of templates has started generating red warnings about the use of templates in the |title=
field. It never used to do this but is a recent thing. It is probably to do with some code within cite trying to do fancy things and templates make things too complicated for it. Not wonderful but we sometimes we just have to live with some limitations - at least until we figure out a better solution.
However, this does not mean that the CO2 template is bad in all cases. Only within the cite template is there a problem. I would appreciate it if a) you would restrict replacing the CO2 template with HTML to only within cite templates and b) undo your over-enthusiastic replacements from the last couple of days. Thanks. A closer look at your ref expansions
Hello, Oculi. Could I ask you to take a closer look at your middle edit expanding bare references at Spring, Texas? I haven't taken the time to look closely, myself, but I see from the diffs that your work added silliness like |last=Administrator
|first=Hcha
and a couple cases of |title=404 - Page Not Found—Harris County Texas Sheriff's Office
. Scripting tools like ReferenceExpander can be a big help, but we still have to pay attention to what they're doing, as they make mistakes quite often. It would be appreciated if you would go back to (at least) the Spring, Texas, article and fix it up. Thanks,— JohnFromPinckney (talk / edits) 09:57, 2 January 2022 (UTC)

Rhodes scholar nomination
I see you point about leaving up the Rhodes scholar cats. Do you think that it is safe to categorize any degree seeking student as an expatriate? This is my thought, but someone else suggested to me that we should only categorize as expatriates those who spend at least 10 years abroad, although oddly while suggesting that a person who spent 19 years in a particular country, and birthed their most famous movement and the main reason we have an article on them while they were in that country, somehow does not actually qualify as an expatriate in that country. My view is degree seeking students in one country from another count as expatriates, but those who do a few weeks or months or study abroad, or an student exchange program that lasts a year or less, it is just not enough to categorize by. Does that seem a reasonable proposition to you, at least if we exclude a few rare cases of degree seeking students who drop out very early in their studies and return to their home country (some degree seeking students drop out and stay in the country where they are visiting). Another example is Lloyd Alexander, who I am sure belongs in the Category:American expatriates in France. I am not sure any one of his actions there are quite long enough, if it was just his time with the military in World War II it would probably not be enough, but he stays at the end of his deployment and becomes a student there, marries their, and becomes the official English translator for a significant French writer, so to me the sum total of what he does there is enough to be worth categorizing by.John Pack Lambert (talk) 13:13, 22 December 2021 (UTC)
- Anyone with a work contract in a foreign country is an expatriate: they will have an 'expatriate contract'. (I have been one in several countries.) The idea of 'at least 10 years' is idiosyncratic. I'm not particularly in favour of categorising everyone in separate expatriate categories for every country they have worked in but a Rhodes scholar is a big deal and it seems reasonable to place its categories in the expatriates tree. Ernest Hemingway is in 7 different expatriate categories; Hulk (footballer) is in 8 or so. Someone like the US Ambassador to the UK is definitely an expatriate. In short I am happier with the subcats of Category:American expatriates in France than I am with the top-level articles. Oculi (talk) 17:08, 22 December 2021 (UTC)

AWB issues
In this edit, you change a working link to the website, to a link which isn't clickable in the infobox. And in some changes, you replace "accessdate" with "access-date", though one is an alternative of the other and there is no need to make this change. Fram (talk) 12:38, 4 April 2022 (UTC)
Oh, and here and elsewhere, you remove trailing blanks after "website", but these should remain: the parameters in the infobox are aligned, it is not helpful to remove the spaces from one of them. Fram (talk) 12:40, 4 April 2022 (UTC)
- :ref= is not supposed to contain an external link, working or not; pages with such external links are placed in Category:CS1 errors: external links. The edit removed Galyang Municipality from the error category. access-date is the correct form given in [[2]], and accessdate is an alias. The website edits catch typos such as webiste= or website-. My policy is to stop doing things people complain about so I will find something else to do. Oculi (talk) 12:56, 4 April 2022 (UTC)
- Please look again at the Galyang edit. I'm not complaining about the "ref=" issue, but about the change of "|website = http://galyangmun.gov.np" to "|website=galyangmun.gov.np". For access-date and accessdate: one shouldn't change aliases to one another (either direction), both work and are accepted, that's why it is an alias. And I have no issue when you change "webiste" to "website" of course, but changing "|website =" to "|website= " does nothing of the sort. Fram (talk) 13:16, 4 April 2022 (UTC)
- Sorry - yes, I agree that |website = http://galyangmun.gov.np" was a mistake on my part. The intention there is to delink |website = http://galyangmun.gov.np" when 'website=' is within a CS1 cite and that one is not; and I failed to catch it. Oculi (talk) 13:24, 4 April 2022 (UTC)

- Well, the 2nd edit is very POV but is on ru wiki and was the only edit there of the ip (in 2021). For the first edit (the only edit of the same ip on en wiki), Refill seems to have removed the English translation of the title while supplying other details, so perhaps the answer is to use trans-title as well as title. (Ref expander does the same as Refill.) Oculi (talk) 16:58, 4 April 2022 (UTC)

Category moves
Hello, Oculi,
As you probably know, you can't move a category page like you would do with an article page. Category:Academic staff of Carolinum, Zurich, is now a redirect category and it should be empty. But it's not. Please remove this category from all of the pages currently in this category and direct them to the new category you created that they should be in. It is much easier if you do this kind of thing through speedy renames at CFD, then a bot will recategorize all of the pages instead of having you do this task manually. Thank you, I appreciate you taking care of this. Liz Read! Talk! 01:17, 13 January 2023 (UTC)

Category:Emigrants from Northern Ireland
Are you saying that a person from Northern Ireland is not also from the United Kingdom? Laurel Lodged (talk) 15:35, 21 April 2023 (UTC)
- I am not aware of making such a claim. I am deferring to 2009 January 7#Category:Northern Irish people which renamed 'Northern Irish people' to 'People from Northern Ireland' (without any mention of a change of scope). Thus Category:People from Northern Ireland has acquired via cfd a Wikipedia-specific meaning, being equivalent to Category:English people within Category:People by nationality within the United Kingdom (subcat of Category:British people). ('Rename and purge' or 'rename and re-parent' might indicate a change of scope.) Category:New Zealand people seems to avoid the difficulties you seem to have with 'from' (insisting it is by country) and yet Category:Northern Ireland people seems not to have been considered. Oculi (talk) 16:38, 21 April 2023 (UTC)

Invitation
Hello Oculi!
- The New Pages Patrol is currently struggling to keep up with the influx of new articles needing review. We could use a few extra hands to help.
- We think that someone with your activity and experience is very likely to meet the guidelines for granting.
- Reviewing/patrolling a page doesn't take much time, but it requires a strong understanding of Wikipedia’s CSD policy and notability guidelines.
- Kindly read the tutorial before making your decision, and feel free to post on the project talk page with questions.
- If patrolling new pages is something you'd be willing to help out with, please consider applying here.
Thank you for your consideration. We hope to see you around!

Apologies, this is far too late, but you can't withdraw a nomination where other editors have supported you.
Probably not worth reopening the discussion now, just something to keep in mind. — Qwerfjkltalk 06:53, 3 August 2023 (UTC)
- I withdrew it because it had become contentious and because I had undertaken to do so at ANI (see link in closure notice). So in theory I would have to request each supporter to strike their 'support'? Oculi (talk) 08:35, 3 August 2023 (UTC)
- Where is this documented? Oculi (talk) 09:35, 3 August 2023 (UTC)
- WP:NACD,
Exception: closing your own withdrawn nomination as a speedy keep, when all other viewpoints were for keep as well.
(my emphasis). I would suggest just letting someone else close discussions like these. — Qwerfjkltalk 11:05, 3 August 2023 (UTC)- Thanks. So I undertook to do something outside my powers. I think all these will be reopened (there were several others) - let contention resume. Oculi (talk) 11:28, 3 August 2023 (UTC)
- WP:NACD,
Request
@Oculi: Can you please move Category:Southern Professional Hockey League user templates to Category:SPHL user templates. I created this category and the league just rebranded its name. Catfurball (talk) 18:04, 3 August 2023 (UTC)
