The long-awaited first installment of “Wicked” has finally landed in theatres, and it’s safe to say it’s taking audiences by storm. My best friend and I joined a packed theater of eager fans, all buzzing with excitement. We were greeted by a sign politely asking us not to sing along during the movie — admittedly, a tough rule to follow when “Popular” kicked in.
For those unfamiliar, “Wicked” serves as a reimagining of the “Land of Oz,” telling the story of Elphaba, a misunderstood young woman born with green skin and Glinda, a popular socialite with charm to spare. It is a tale of unexpected friendship, self-discovery and the thin line between good and evil, offering a fresh perspective on the iconic characters from “The Wizard of Oz.” With its humor, heart and memorable music, the story captivates audiences of all ages.
This adaptation of the beloved Broadway musical doesn’t just bring the magic of Oz to life; it cranks it up to eleven. Cynthia Ervio and Ariana Grande shine as Elphaba and Glinda, and their chemistry makes the core of the movie work. Cynthia delivered a breathtaking performance as the misunderstood green witch, really ‘Holding Space,’ for the experiences of the character, translating those emotions to her audience. And Ariana? She nailed Glinda’s bubbly charm and surprising depth. Her comedic timing had the audience laughing, and she brought just enough nuance to keep her character from being over the top.
One thing that sets the movie apart is the visuals. The costumes, set designs and special effects turn Oz into a vibrant, magical world. Watching the characters dance and twirl through these colorful sets is almost surreal. And yes, the broom-flying sequences deliver plenty of wow moments without veering into campy territory. The film also delivered some great nods to “The Wizard of Oz.” Spotting Easter Eggs, like Dorothy’s slippers, felt like a scavenger hunt. These moments didn’t feel forced but added a layer of nostalgia that fans of the original will appreciate.
What hit hardest, though, was the emotional depth. The film leans heavily into the friendship between Elphaba and Glinda, exploring how differences and misunderstandings can strengthen a bond rather than break it. There were plenty of laugh-out-loud moments, but the heartfelt scenes, especially those about loyalty and sacrifice, left more than a few teary eyes in the audience (mine included).
Overall, “Wicked” is a must-see. It strikes the perfect balance between magical spectacle and emotional storytelling. Whether you’re a longtime fan of the Broadway hit or just looking for a great night out, this movie delivers. Just remember, no singing along — though once you’re in the car, all bets are off. See you next fall for Part Two!
