Description

A pagoda, sometimes also called "stupa", a structure usually built on sacred ground, is a place of meditation and worship of Buddha, built in traditional Asian style.
Indian stupas were originally characterized by a dome-shaped steeple, but combined with the traditional architectural styles of China, they acquired new forms of radiant splendor. Originally built on circular or square bases the octagonal bases became predominant and the pagoda began to develop its characteristic multitiered roofs with up-swept gables.
Whether a pagoda is called a Zhenshen Sarira pagoda (in which the real remains of Buddha or saints were buried) or a Fashen Sarira pagoda (in which the souls of Buddha or saints were supposed to be buried) is determined by what it actually containes. Most pagodas are Zhenshen Sarira pagodas; rarely is a pagoda a Fashen pagoda, because Buddhists hold the real remains of Buddha or saints in very high regard.
