The Peabody Ducks
The Peabody Hotel is famous for a very unique tradition that you won’t experience at any other hotel: The daily Peabody Duck March! Every day at 11 AM and 5 PM, a red carpet is rolled out for a flock of ducks, who waddle down to splash in the lobby fountain. This tradition started in the 1930s, when the hotel’s General Manager came back from a hunting trip with a friend. After enjoying a little too much Tennessee whiskey, they thought it would be hilarious to put their live decoy ducks into the elegant marble fountain. The hotel guests loved it, so much so that it has become a tradition!
The Peabody Ducks reside in a $200,000 Royal Duck Palace on the rooftop of the hotel. It is a palace, indeed, featuring a marble and glass structure, a separate small house built to be a tiny duck-sized replica of the hotel, and its own bronze fountain. The ducks are raised by a local farmer and live at the hotel for just a short period of time before being released into the wild, so there is a rotating stream of new ducks every three months. And in honor of their fowl friends, The Peabody does not offer duck on any of their menus, making their French restaurant Chez Philippe perhaps the only one in existence that does not serve duck.
