  Always loved this one for being so deliciously dark and mean spirited. A group of likable college kids go to visit an ancient temple only to be held hostage there and they have no idea why? Yep, my kinda dark shit.

  I love the entire cast, especially Jonathan Tucker and Laura Ramsey. Ramsey especially just descends  into total looney tunes quite beautifully. I read the novel this is based on as well and obviously it was more intense and generally better, but that’s almost always the case with book adaptations so it’s kind of a moot point. I still think this does about as good a job as can be expected of bringing that vision to the big screen.

  There are also several scenes of absolutely stomach churning gore that are just beautifully done. Just try and watch the leg amputation scene without getting a little squeamish!

  More than anything, this uncompromisingly grim horror film reminds me of the best segment in the anthology CREEPSHOW 2, entitled "The Raft," in which a group of friends taking a swim in a secluded lake find themselves trapped on a raft, surrounded, and preyed upon by an inexplicable evolutionary aberration in the water. That story doesn't explain what exactly the shapeless, amorphous THING is, and it doesn't need to, because it's scary and it eats you. That's enough!

  When it comes to a horror movie, a film has to do at least one thing for me. Either it has to engage me with a compelling story or premise that gets executed in an effective way (HINT: IT, Dead Silence, Saw) or it has to twist my stomache (Hostel, Martyrs)—see, I didn't mention scare me, because I am from the school that believes those movies with the intention of scarying (not that sometimes horror movies can't do this) fit more in the category of terror as parting from the semantics, when you are scared a synonym would be "terrified," whereas when you are disgusted or traumatized another word would be "horrofied."

  See, this is why I rarely leave my house! Let alone leave my goddamn city or my goddamn country! I ain't about to go to some foreign land and fuck around near some nature or wildlife that I know nothing about. The Ruins is a brutal little horror picture that's also kind of fun? And by fun I mean the "putting yourself in that situation and deciding how you would handle it" type of fun. Tbh, if I was faced with something like this, I'd probably just lay down and die.
