this movie feels like such a perfect blueprint for how to do a stage to screen adaptation correctly. it keeps the sharpness, comedy, grit and sound of the musical but embraces the scale and potential for perspective that you get from film. it grounds the story itself in reality in terms of the costuming and locations, but then figuratively and literally stages the musical numbers, swapping the sultry minimalism of the stage version for a kind of old hollywood grandeurโ€ฆ

i really, really didn't like this. and i don't like that i didn't like it, because i respect what it's trying to do and i can see what people see in it. it's more evocative of a dream (or nightmare) than so many other films which have chased that aesthetic, but under that it pitches its themes completely straight (ironically) - there's no room for interpretation because it's all tell no show, right down to the fact that most ofโ€ฆ

i really feel like indy is the last person who would just casually refer to something as a pandora's box if it wasn't possibly literally pandora's box. heโ€™s seen too much, he knows better.

i was going to keep this out of the 0.5 star club out of respect for my boy harrison ford, but when it ended on yet another shot of the hat i almost launched my phone across the room and i have to live in my truth.

    hoo-ah i guess?

i don't know what to say really - it's a very technically impressive movie but the idea that this is anti-war feels like such nonsense to me. it's happy to abandon facts and nuance to show the american soldiers (who i could barely tell apart despite recognising most of the pretty stacked cast) as courageous, brave, stoic warriors for peace and virtue (?!), willing to do all of the killing necessary to rescue their brothers in armsโ€ฆ

spent this whole movie obsessing over how fucking huge thomas o'malley seems to be - he's a large, chunky, burly lad and i love that.
