I studied Marketing as a major and Transportation and Sociology as minors.

I learned so much that my head almost exploded.

Thankfully, it did not. However, while the Doctorate is most difficult challenge I have ever pursued, I am thankful that I can continue to celebrate my amazing career and life as a University professor.

The more I teach, the more I learn.

Teaching social media marketing does that to us introverted curious types.

  • I studied Marketing as an emphasis. Loved it and knew it had potential as a career.

  • Activities and Societies: Sigma Pi Fraternity (Epsilon Kappa Chapter; founding father)

I studied Accounting because my dad told me to do so, and I was too young to know any better.

described as a digital personal learning network or “PLN.”

This article describes a proven assignment framework, requiring students to build their own digital PLN, using widely available RSS newsfeed tools such as Feedly and Twitter Lists. Student feedback is offered to support the effectiveness of this approach and suggestions are made regarding other courses that could benefit from being taught with the support of a PLN-based assignment.

The course is designed and organized around a team project requiring that students act as a new small business to invent a new-to-the-world consumer product and a Marketing Plan for targeting a niche market.

Besides the final written Marketing Plan and a presentation zen style sales pitch to potential investors, students complete several preliminary assignments (or deliverables) including: (1) transcripts of their electronic brainstorming sessions to generate new product ideas, (2) a post brainstorming evaluation of ideas, (3) an informal presentation of their 3 best new product ideas for class feedback, (4) a written proposal of their new product line and preliminary marketing strategies, and (5) a research brief concerning market demand and trends for their proposed product line.

Students also complete several LinkedIn assignments, including (1) completing several career exploration tests, (2) completing a personal SWOT and improving their LinkedIn About section, and (3) completing two weeks of measured social sharing activity.

Note: the checklist that they follow for this project is found in the Featured section of my LinkedIn Profile.
