Update from the Complaints Desk: December 2024

This year has seen elections held in numerous provinces, including Saskatchewan, British Columbia, New Brunswick, Nova Scotia. November 14, 2024 – for immediate release The National NewsMedia Council (NNC) has considered and dismissed one portion of a complaint and upheld another portion of a complaint about a June 21, 2024 opinion article published by the National Post. The opinion article, “The evidence is clear — there is no famine in Gaza,” argued that earlier claims warning of an imminent famine in Gaza were largely unsupported and unquestioned. November 11, 2024 – for immediate release The National NewsMedia Council (NNC) has dismissed a complaint about accuracy and a lack of context in a September 7, 2024, article, “Russian-Canadian director responds to TIFF documentary backlash, says journalists ‘follow the story where it goes,’” published by the Globe and Mail. The article featured an interview with a Russian-Canadian filmmaker, Anastasia Trofimova, about her film, which follows Russian soldiers during the invasion of Ukraine.

September 11, 2024 – for immediate release The National NewsMedia Council (NNC) has dismissed with reservation a complaint about accuracy and attribution in a May 13, 2024, opinion column published by the National Post.  The opinion column, “Don’t believe those insisting concerns over safer supply are a ‘moral panic,’” argues that a recent medical journal article “accusing journalists of spreading disinformation and causing widespread panic” had “missed the mark.”
