A fireman has been injured after a brick was thrown at the engine he was driving in Downpatrick.

The crew had been sent to a fire on the Killough Road in the Flying Horse estate at about 2230 BST on Saturday.

Before they got to the blaze someone ran out and threw a brick at the window.

Glass showered the face of the driver. and he suffered cuts and glass in his eyes. He was discharged from hospital during the night.

Alan Fulford, from the fire service in Downpatrick, said such attacks hurt the whole community.

"It has a lot of consequences," he said.

"Our firefighters do a lot of work up there, our firefighters belong to the community.

"It causes a few problems for us in that we're more wary going up there, it slows down the appliances. In that case the appliance didn't get to the call at all."
