In 2002, American couple Kent and Claire Brainerd stumbled across a dilapidated Stubton Hall on the Nottinghamshire and Lincolnshire border. The building was once at the heart of a thriving 18,000 acre country estate but had most recently been used as a school.
The Brainerds dreamed of turning it into a top-class hotel and spa but the recession meant they could not fully realise their plans.
Dominic Heale reports.
