UC San Diego Health Launches Jacobs Medical Center
The facility offers patients leading-edge cancer, stem cell and surgical therapies.
SAN DIEGO -- On Nov. 20, San Diego Health opened Jacobs Medical Center, a 245-bed medical and surgical specialty hospital named in recognition of $100 million in gifts from Joan and Irwin Jacobs.
Patients at the 10-story facility will have access to emerging stem cell and immunotherapy trials through Moores Cancer Center, the region’s only National Cancer Institute-designated Comprehensive Cancer Center. They will also have access to nearly 100 cancer subspecialists, plus dedicated support teams, such as respiratory therapists and pain management experts.
“Jacobs Medical Center represents a tremendous investment in the future and will transform health care for our region,” UC San Diego Chancellor Pradeep K. Khosla said in a statement.

Designed by CannonDesign, and built by Kitchell, the $943 million, 509,500-square-foot facility represents the integration of advanced imaging and surgical technologies with environmental elements to speed healing. Patients will have access to experts, therapies, surgeries and treatment trials only available at UC San Diego Health.
“When we came here in 1966, the medical school was just starting, and there was no hospital,” said Irwin Jacobs, co-founder, former chairman and CEO of Qualcomm Inc. and a UC San Diego founding faculty member. “Today, it’s very exciting to see Jacobs Medical Center open. More and more, we’re learning how to bring results from basic research in biology and engineering to medicine, and to the patient. This medical center is going to show how effective that kind of integrated care can be. Innovations will spread out from San Diego, and go all around the world.”
