Driver Charged In Crash That Killed Annandale Woman: Police

Fairfax County Police charged the driver of a car that killed an 83-year-old woman in an Annandale parking lot on May 20.

ANNANDALE, VA — Fairfax County Police charged the driver of a car that killed an 83-year-old woman in an Annandale parking lot on May 20.

Joana Konadu, 41, of Annandale was charged with reckless driving. She was issued a summons and released on her own recognizance, the Fairfax County Police Department said Thursday.

Konadu, who was driving a 2008 Nissan Sentra, lost control of the car shortly after 11 a.m. on May 20 after she dropped food and spilled a drink inside her car, police said. The car crossed the center median in the 7200 block of Maple Place in Annandale. The car then crossed over a sidewalk and drove into a parking lot, striking four people.

One of the four people, Eileen Garnett, 83, of Annandale, was taken to the hospital with injuries considered life-threatening. Garnett died from her injuries on May 25.

Garnett and the other people were gathered in the parking lot discussing a community project in the area, police said.

Victim advocates from the FCPD’s Major Crimes Bureau’s Victim Services Division have been assigned to this case to ensure Garnett’s family is receiving appropriate resources and assistance.
