Play School Concert 2015 | Review

by Catherine Leo

The ever popular Play School Concert has been back in Adelaide during August 2015 with a new show called ‘Once Upon A Time’, starring regulars from the TV show, Teo Gebert and Rachael Coopes, and pianist Bill.

It was my first ever visit to a Play School concert and I must admit, it did feel like the TV was jumping out at me and I instantly joined in with the singing of the theme song with gusto… Perhaps even more than my three year old had!

Within minutes a mum from the crowd had responded to Teo’s warm welcome to us all with a “You’re hot Teo!” and it set the scene that this show wasn’t just for the kids. There were several in-jokes for the parents including a moment when pianist Bill started on the first few bars of Flashdance, and Teo almost turned from a sheep into an exotic dancer.

The Norwood Town Hall is a perfect venue for hundreds of under 5s and I loved that mums were feeding babies while their toddlers played in front of them, snacks were eaten, the odd tantrum could happen without any major disruption to the show… It was as comfortable as you could feel given the audience is so young and not so able to sit still. Movement and interaction was encouraged from the stage and lots of kids joined in.

A giant book on the stage linked the popular songs with a turning of each page meaning we entered a new theme. The set design had some really effective tools for adding texture and movement and I particularly liked Little Ted bobbing along on a long scarf ‘sea’.

I commend the stars for conveying such a bright and happy attitude to their audience and for helping the parents enjoy the show too with plenty of jokes and giggles. I really recommend the show for your little ones as it’s not easy to take them to live performances and feel comfortable with every challenge that might come your way.
