The newly minted San Diego Rockets made Riley the seventh pick in the 1967 NBA draft, and he played three seasons in San Diego.
In 1970, another new team, the Portland Trail Blazers, claimed Riley in the expansion draft, but traded him to the Los Angeles Lakers.
Riley played five-plus seasons in L.A. before the Lakers traded him to Phoenix early in the 1975-76 season. It would be his last as an NBA player.
In his most productive season, 1974-75, Riley, a 6-4 swingman, scored 11.0 points per game, averaging 22 minutes in 46 games played.
In nine seasons, he finished with career per-game averages of 7.4 points, 1.7 rebounds and 1.6 assists, playing 15 minutes per game.
He also played in 44 playoff games, averaging 5.7 points and 1.5 rebounds in the postseason. He won a title with the Lakers in '72.
