She had one deck. The designated code recognition signal letters were: LJAR. On 25 January 1940, the German submarine U19, commanded by Kapitanleutnant Joachim Schepke, torpedoed and sank the Gudveig at 2130 hrs (CT). On the morning of 23 January, U19 had broken through the mine warning area off the Farne Islands at high speed and immediately found about 20 unescorted southbound ships from the Methil convoy HN.8. Of these, she sank the Baltanglia and the Pluto. After observing minesweepers in the area on 25 January, Schepke waited and later torpedoed the Everene and Gudveig, both of which were in another unescorted group, heading north for Methil to join a convoy bound for Norway. The Gudveig had sailed from Bergen and on 9 January 1940 had joined the 38-ship convoy HN.7, sailing from Norwegian waters to Methil, arriving on 13 January. The Gudveig then travelled down to the Tyne where she loaded up with coal, intending to sail back to Bergen independently, but she sank in Kriegsmarine quadrant AN5186.
