About the Item
"Milky Way" is a contemporary surrealist and ethereal multi-figurative oil painting by Italian artist, Daniela Astone.
Astone's latest work centers around figures floating in ethereal or deep sea spaces. In “Milky Way” Astone's figures seem to be travelling in outer space along a channel of light. We see the influence of contemporaries like Odd Nerdrum in her glowing figures, yet these seraphs floating high within an opulent blue galactic setting brings to mind frescoes from 14th Century masters like Giotto. Are they travelling through one of Einstein’s wormholes? Are they drifting from one life, into the next? Is this an enquiry of science or spirituality?

"The Kiss" 2023, dark figurative oil painting by Daniela Astone
By Daniela Astone
Located in Sag Harbor, NY
Part of Daniela Astone's series of figures in different ethereal and surrealistic spaces. "The Kiss" brings to mind Gustav Klimt's famous 1908 painting of the same name but instead of an abstracted gold background, Astone creates a mysterious creature enveloping and suspending the figure in mid-air. The dark monster looks ominous until you notice the nude figure leaning into her partner, her hands lightly caressing or leaning on the the amorphous creature. Her body is relaxed and her eyes closed. As a classical artist who paints the nude figure everyday, Astone is masterful at depicting women at ease in their natural bodies rather than women self-conscious of their nudity—posing but fearful of exploitation at the same time—a theme in art history that continues today.
Some of the sweeping strokes of black are inspired by Japanese paintings techniques, and on the lighter areas there are rain drop falling from a blue-grey cloud in the background.

Orange
By Angel Ramiro Sanchez
Located in Sag Harbor, NY
Painted from a sketch from life, a nude, female figure sits with an orange cloth draped around her shoulders. Ramiro places the figure on a pedestal, draped in white linens. The figure's back is revealed, curving sensually and naturally, hair pulled up in a bun to accentuate her form.
Signed: Angel Ramiro Sanchez in lower right corner
Angel Ramiro Sanchez was born in 1974 in Maracaibo, Venezuela. At age six was accepted with full scholarship into the Instituto the Niños Cantores del Zulia, school for musically gifted children. At age fourteen he began five years of apprenticeship with the realist painter, Abdon J. Romero, an eminent specialist in murals for churches and public buildings. In 1993, a study grant from Mgr. Gustavo Ocando Yamarte, Founder the Niños Cantores, enabled him to travel to Florence, Italy, where he studied at the renowned Accademia di Belle Arti, graduating Magna Cum Laude in 1997. At the same time, he was enrolled at The Florence Academy of Art,founded by painter Daniel Graves, where he received a diploma in Painting. Ramiro was appointed senior painting instructor at The Florence Academy of Art in 1997, and is currently Director of the Advanced Painting Program.
Ramiro paints only from life, searching for accuracy beyond physical appearance to reach the psychological state of his subject. He believes the painter must draw his information from "all five senses" to tell the complete human story.
Ramiros work is predominantly represented by th e Grenning Gallery in Sag Harbor, New York, but also Scriba Gallery, venice, Italy, Jack Meier Gallery, Houston, Tx.
Ramiros works can be found in numerous private collections in Europe, The United States and South America. Public collections include: The Fondazione Stelline, Milan, Italy. The Fremantle Foundation for Foreing Artist in Tuscany at Villa Peyron, Florence, Italy and The Muscarelle Museum of Art at the College of William and Mary, Williamsburg, VA. USA. Hello Hen ! Large Surrealist Contemporary Oil on Canvas.
By Frank Docherty
Located in Cotignac, FR
Large surrealist contemporary oil on canvas by Scottish artist Frank McLean Docherty R.S.W.
This piece whilst wonderfully colourful, playful and erotic is typical of the witty sense of humour this artist displays in all his work. The title 'Hello Hen !' ( Hen being the scottish slang for 'girl' ) is used playfully as a double-entendre. In the image we see the artist has before him a beautiful naked woman and yet chooses to paint the real hen. Also we notice that the plant's flower heads under the woman are wilting and the artist pictured (a self portrait of Docherty), an older man, suggest that the artist's desires are on the wane. Docherty likes to tease us visually and asks questions and presents conundrums to the viewer.
Frank McLean Docherty was born in Glasgow , Scotland in 1942. He became a student at Glasgow School of Art in 1960 and graduated from the Department of Printed Textiles in 1964. He taught in a secondary school in the East End of Glasgow for two years, thereafter departing to work in Dublin in the Republic of Ireland as a textile designer (Marks & Spencer, Heals and Liberty of London). He was also an illustrator for a range of newspapers and an Art Director of magazines.
In 1973, he was appointed Principal Teacher of Art in a Scottish High School and in 1978 was honoured by the Queen when he was appointed Member of the Royal Society of Painters in Watercolours (R.S.W.) He left education in 1994. Since that time he has developed a vision which is quite unique in Scottish Art.

'Security' Conceptual Nude Portrait
By Dinh Y Nhi
Located in Rye, NY
‘Security’ is a large framed contemporary surrealist figurative oil on canvas painting of vertical format, created by Vietnamese artist Dinh Y Nhi in 2010. Featuring a cold palette mostly made of grey and black tones, accented with blue and beige touches, the painting depicts a frontal view of a nude figure. This piece exemplifies Y Nhi's style of paintings as her success with two-colors; red, blue or black and white, addresses modern themes and issues devoid of gender. Her figurative surrealism style of stick figures is warped and elongated, stretched out of proportion. Each figure tilts and twists at painful angles. They bring to mind the famous harrowing faces in Edward Munch's ‘The Scream’, or the difficult distorted ones from the portraits of Francis Bacon. But most of the faces Y Nhi paints are miniature ones devoid of details, deceptively random and simple brush strokes. There is a playfulness that reflects the outer images the painter projects of herself. Her style also allows her to convey complex textures, and emotions, in her images. Dinh Y Nhi is a graduate of Hanoi's School of Fine Arts. Her work has been exhibited in many shows in Vietnam. She is receiving much notice among the Vietnamese press and art patrons in the United States, Australia and Asian countries. With its powerful presence and great proportions, this surrealist oil on canvas painting will be a definite conversation piece in any home, whether placed above a sofa, console table or enfilade. Set inside a frame, the painting is titled in the lower section.
