Leiko Ikemura Art
Japanese, b. 1951
Leiko Ikemura was born in Tsu, Mie Prefecture, Japan. She studied at the State University in Osaka, Japan, and the Escuela Superior de Bellas Artes de Santa Isabel de Hungria, Sevilla, Spain. She is the recipient of numerous awards including the Art Encouragement Prize of the Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology Japan in 2019; the Cologne Fine Art Prize of Germany in 2014; the Critics Award for Visual Arts by the German Association of Critics in 2001; and the Jury Prize at the International Triennial for Original Graphics in 1988.
In 2002 she was awarded an artist residency at the Josef and Anni Albers Foundation in New Haven, Connecticut. Her work has been exhibited at galleries and museums in Europe, Asia and North America including the Kunstmuseum in Basel, Switzerland; the Musée cantonal des Beaux-Arts in Lausanne, Switzerland; the National Museum of Modern Art in Tokyo, Japan; the National Art Center in Tokyo, Japan; Museum on the Seam in Jerusalem, Israel; Centre of Contemporary Art Znaki Czasu in Torun, Poland; The Museum of Oriental Ceramics in Osaka, Japan; Vanji Sculpture Garden Museum in Mishima, Japan; Museum of the City of Belgrade & Belgrade Cultural Centre in Belgrade, Serbia; Nevada Museum of Art in Reno, Nevada; Kunsten Museum of Modern Art In Aalborg, Denmark; and the Berlin Cathedral in Germany as well as at Frieze Sculpture 2019 in English Gardens, Regent’s Park, London, England.
