Léon Couturier Art
French, 1842-1935
Léon Antoine Lucien Couturier , born on December 29 , 1842 in Mâcon and died on December 21 , 1935 in Neuilly-sur-Seine, was a naturalistic painter , specializing in maritime and military subjects. Léon Couturier was admitted to the École des beaux-arts de Lyon in 1860, then went to Paris in 1864 where he was a student in the studio of Alexandre Cabanel . He participated in the defense of the capital during the siege of Paris by the Prussians in 1870. This traumatic experience of war and defeat was the source of inspiration for a first series of paintings devoted to the conflict and then to the representation of soldiers and military life. A stay in North Africa seems to be at the origin of a certain number of works dedicated to colonial troops.
From the 1880s , he devoted his brush to the representation of military ships and sailors of the State. These productions earned him marks of official recognition. Appointed painter of the Navy in 1890 and decorated with the Legion of Honor on December 31, 1897, he benefited from public commissions for paintings. At the end of his life, his painting abandoned warships for fishing and fishermen .
He exhibited regularly at the Salon of French artists of the National Society of Fine Arts , where he obtained a medal of 3 th class in 1881. He also received a bronze medal at the Paris Exposition in 1889 and to the ' Universal Exhibition of 1900.
He also worked as a book illustrator. He signed the drawings for three collections by the poet of the sea Yann Nibor : Chansons et récits de mer (1893, preface by Pierre Loti ), Nos matelots (1895) and La Chanson des cols bleus, popular songs of the French fleet (1901) . He illustrated La Marine française by military historian Maurice Loir (1893) and La Guerre Fatale France-Angleterre by Captain Danrit (Flammarion, 1900, 2 vol.).
His works are held by different french Museums : Cahors, musée de Cahors Henri-Martin Chalon-sur-Saône, musée Nicéphore-Niépce
Cognac, musée d'art et d'histoire Mâcon, musée des Ursulines Paris, musée national de la Marine

A 1950s Pastel & Charcoal on Paper Drawing of a Hockey Game by Francis Chapin
By Francis Chapin
Located in Chicago, IL
Perfect for you hockey enthusiast! A 1950s pastel & charcoal on paper drawing of a hockey game by artist Francis Chapin. Artwork size: 9" x 12". Matted size: 14" x 18". Provenance: Estate of the Artist.
Francis Chapin, affectionately called the “Dean of Chicago Painters” by his colleagues, was one of the city’s most popular and celebrated painters in his day. Born at the dawn of the 20th Century in Bristolville, Ohio, Chapin graduated from Washington & Jefferson College near Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania before enrolling at the Art Institute of Chicago in 1922. He would set down deep roots at the Art Institute of Chicago, exhibiting there over 31 times between 1926 and 1951. In 1927 Chapin won the prestigious Bryan Lathrop Fellowship from the Art Institute – a prize that funded the artist’s yearlong study trip to Europe. Upon his return to the United States, Chapin decided to remain in Chicago, noting the freedom Chicago artists have in developing independently of the pressure to conform to pre-existing molds (as was experienced by artists in New York, for example). Chapin became a popular instructor at the Art Institute, teaching there from 1929 to 1947 and at the Art Institute’s summer art school in Saugatuck, Michigan (now called Oxbow) between 1934 – 1938 (he was the director of the school from 1941-1945). Chapin’s contemporaries among Chicago’s artists included such luminaries as Ivan Le Lorraine Albright...

-ARTIST STATEMENT-
I depict my person in multiplicity with different selves representing dramatis
personae. My likeness is both implicit and symbolic in the portrayal of my
narrative; the drama involved in creating art and the artist’s role in society. I
use realism to invite the viewer into mysterious inner worlds that are layered
reflections of the outer. Dehumanizing environments are imbued with art
historical references as a critique of power structures. The artist is an
Everyman who is at odds with society and his self.
Visually my work is a celebration of society’s dark undercurrents and its
overlooked absurdities. I use charcoal and printmaking media as their
tenebrous values add a fitting metaphor. The nuances of light and shadow
seduce viewers into a world their better judgment would have them avoid.
This provokes a sense of disquietude that causes viewers to assess our world
through the austerity of a colorless, yet not humorless, light.
-BIO-
Christopher Ganz grew up in Northeast Ohio and from early on had a fertile imagination and an interest in art. Christopher's artistic education truly began at the University of Missouri, where his love of the human form led to many figure drawing classes and his exposure to the wonders of printmaking. Christopher's then went onto graduate school at Indiana University and a summer abroad program in Italy was a dream realized. Christopher then grasped charcoal with a renewed vigor and large, sfumato-laden drawings ensued. Christopher's artistic influences are many; from a seminal exposure to Dore's engravings of the Divine Comedy, to Rembrandt, Caravaggio, Goya, and up to Lucian Freud, Mark Tansey...

Rooftops (Framed 1970's New York Cityscape Landscape Drawing by William Clutz)
By William Clutz
Located in Hudson, NY
Abstracted New York City landscape drawing of urban rooftops and tree tops
"Rooftops", created by William Clutz in 1977
30 x 20 inches, charcoal and pastel on paper
33 x 25 inches in light wood frame
This framed pastel on paper was made in 1977 by William Clutz. It features an abstracted depiction of New York City rooftops as seen from a high window. Of particular note is the artist's technique with pastel; a wonderful texture and motion is created by closely woven striated lines. Sunlight reflects off brown rooftops and peaking green tree tops. The charcoal and pastel drawing is framed in a natural light wood frame with non-reflective glass and wire backing for installation.
About the Artist:
Renowned as the “impressionist of the contemporary metropolis”, William Clutz uses the city, in its entirety, as his subject. Pedestrians crossing streets become stars of the stage; the hustle and bustle of traffic and surrounding buildings are the chorus; each play their part in the overall composition. Lighting and color shift this observation of the everyday into a remarkable wonder. “It is surely Clutz”, wrote Gerrit Henry in Art News, 1979, “an artist who has rejected the niceties of representation in favor of the quintessence.” The young artist moved to New York City in 1955 and just four years later had his first solo exhibit at the Condon Riley Gallery. Clutz went on to show in major uptown galleries such as David Herbert, where, notably in 1962 he received a NYTimes review titled, Return of the Figure. That same year, his role in the revival of figuration was further solidified with inclusion in the MoMA group show, Recent Painting USA, The Figure. This was a pivotal turning point from which emerged a 50-year exhibiting career.

COUNTRY LANDSCAPE - French School - Italian Oil on Canvas Painting
By Emilio Pergola
Located in Napoli, IT
Country landscape - Emilio Pergola Italia 2006 - Oil on canvas cm.50x130
Pergola's works reveal the touch of antiquity that recalls the past where shapes and colors are happily combined.
A well-harmonized painting that draws inspiration from the paintings of the French master Leon Augustin Lhermitte.
Lhermitte preferred to portray rural scenes and the peasants at work, so much so that he was called "the painter of the reapers".
In this beautiful oil on canvas we admire some scenes of life in the fields, some women work while others prepare their lunch.
In each painting, Pergola observes the world with deep care, outlining the most important values, the essence and the cosmic symbolism of nature. Pergola's creative technique is a touch of art, its rural landscapes, cottages, its beloved animals, such as horses and cows...
