Roland DUBUC Art

French, 1924-1998

Roland DuBuc, French artist, the sixth of 13 children and son of a construction worker. The very precariousness of the family's financial situation forced him to go to work at the age of 14. In extreme poverty, DuBuc moved to Rouen, where he was lodged by the Salvation Army. During that time, DuBuc struck up friendships with several artists who gave him advice and taught him techniques of drawing. DuBuc moved to other cities later, where he met painters including, among others, Fred Pailhès. In 1950, DuBuc moved to Montmartre in a miserable building without water or electricity. DuBuc’s work gained support from galleries after he participated in the "Great and Young Artists Fair" in Paris. But it wasn't until the mid-1970s during his stay in Switzerland that DuBuc started to earn a comfortable living. Upon return to Paris in the 1980s, his oldest collector, Jean-Paul Villain, opened a gallery that featured DuBuc's work in an important series of exhibitions. These sealed his reputation as a fine artist and gained him an international clientele eager to invest in his works. DuBuc died in his workshop in 1998.

Barge on the Seine River
By Roland Dubuc
Located in London, GB
'Barge on the River Seine', watercolour on paper, by Roland DuBuc (circa 1970s). The broad Parisian river Seine divides Paris into the left and right banks. This particular scene appears to be well down river beyond the city as the greenery along the banks points to. The Seine’s collection of lovely small towns happily graces its banks and proudly conveys French culture. Of course, the best way to experience all of these towns and villages is on a river cruise. The Seine is second only to the Loire River which is France's longest. It rises 18 miles (30 kilometres) northwest of Dijon and flows in a northwesterly direction through Paris before emptying into the English Channel at Le Havre. The artist Dubuc created many artworks with the Seine as backdrop. You can have this one right in your living room. In good overall condition, the piece is newly framed and glazed with anti-reflective glass. It is signed by the artist in the lower left hand. Upon request a video of the painting may be provided. Lunch at Chez Louis
By Roland Dubuc
Located in London, GB
'Lunch at Chez Louis', oil on canvas, by Roland Dubuc (circa 1970s). The outdoor terrace at restaurants and cafés in France goes back centuries as they have always been a gathering place for intellectuals to meet and debate philosophical issues; for the Avant Garde set to display their works; for artists to compare and exchange ideas and for writers to drown their sorrows over their artistic anguish or melancholy. Even the freedom fighters of the French Revolution and later the French Resistance would meet in cafés to plot their course. Regular people of course also enjoy these venues. A very delightful feature of these French institutions is that there is always room for quiet book readers, romantic couples, business meetings and lively groups of friends sharing a bottle of wine. The artist Dubuc captures a slice of this lovely aspect of French culture in this smile-inducing depiction painted in vivid oils. With a background of greenery, the patrons enjoy the outdoors protected from the intense sun by the table's parasols. Ah, the life. The artwork is in good vintage condition, is framed and signed by the artist in the lower left hand corner. Please enjoy the many photos accompanying this listing. Quay by the Bridge in Paris
By Roland Dubuc
Located in London, GB
'Quay by the Bridge in Paris', watercolour on art paper, by Roland Dubuc (circa 1970s-80s). The broad Parisian river Seine divides the city into the left and right banks. The Left Bank, or Rive Gauche is famous for the Latin Quarter while the Right Bank is better known for attractions like Arc de Triomphe, Montmartre, and the Louvre. A trip here simply isn’t complete without a stroll along this romantic river. And a cruise on the Seine or drinks aboard an anchored boat along the quay is a wonderful experience as well. The artist Dubuc created many artworks with the Seine as backdrop. You can have this one right in your living room. In good overall condition, the piece is newly framed and glazed with anti-reflective glass. Upon request a video of the painting may be provided. Early 19th Century English watercolour of woodland near Croxdale Hall
Located in Harkstead, GB
A very attractive and meticulously executed view of a rocky landscape within the woods dating to 1823. This would suit a library or study with its muted tones and skifull draughtsmanship. William Nicholson (1781-1844) Near Croxdale Hall Signed with initials and inscribed with title and date 1823 Pen, ink and grey wash 11 x 8 inches, image only 17 x 13 inches without frame The portrait-painter and etcher William Nicholson was born in Ovingham-on-Tyne, Northumberland, on Christmas Day 1781. His family transferred to Newcastle when his father was appointed Headmaster of the city's Grammar School. At an early age, though, Nicholson appears to have moved to Hull where he made his artistic debut, painting miniatures of officers garrisoned there. He was almost entirely self-taught, learning his craft through the close study of artworks in private and public galleries. He subsequently returned to Newcastle where he received many commissions to paint portraits of the old families of Northumberland. In 1808, he began to exhibit at the Royal Academy, continuing to do so until 1822. By 1814, Nicholson, whose mother was a Scot, had moved to Edinburgh where he set up as a miniaturist and painter in oils. Soon, however, he began to specialize in watercolour portraits. Early subjects included the actor Daniel Terry and the poet and novelist James Hogg. In 1818 he began to publish a series of Portraits of Eminent Scotsmen, etched from his own portraits and those of other painters. Besides Scott and Hogg, the subjects included the writers Robert Burns, John Wilson ('Christopher North'), and Lord Jeffrey, the painters Sir Henry Raeburn, the divines Alexander Carlyle and Alexander Cameron, the engineer James Watt, the architect John Playfair, and the song-collector and composer George Thomson...

Paris Metro Station Les Abesses Montmartre
By Roland Dubuc
Located in London, GB
'Paris Metro Station, Les Abesses, Montmartre', watercolour and gouache on art paper by Roland Dubuc (circa 1960s). When the Paris Metro system opened 116 years ago, Art Nouveau was at its peak. The entrances to stations were designed in Art Nouveau style by Hector Guimard. Eighty-six of his entrances are still in existence. These have become iconic symbols of Paris although originally the style caused some surprise and controversy in 1900. There are two main variants in style: Those with elaborate glass canopies (two originals still exist including this one at Metro Abbesses) and those with cast-iron balustrades decorated in plant-like motifs accompanied by a Métropolitain sign supported by two orange globes...
