Sky Jones (Michael Whipple) Art

American, b. 1947

Sky Jones was born Michael Whipple and was best known for his mastery of light and texture. Artistic inspiration began at an early age for Michael Whipple. Born in 1947 and growing up during the reconstruction period just after the war, he became interested in painting, drawing and sculpture. By the time he was five, he was working with wood and was adept at using a hammer, chisel, screwdriver, saber saw, electric drill and rasp. “For Christmas and birthdays I would ask for wood, clay, art and construction materials. I could feel the magnet drawing me into a lifetime of creating art. The great fun had started," said the artist with the same smile and enthusiasm of a young man. At the University of Utah, Whipple double majored in sculpture and painting and received his bachelor’s degree in art from the university in 1971. He excelled at portrait and figure painting. Working under the direction of renowned sculptor, Angelo Caravaglio, famous portraitist Alvin Gittins, modernist painter V. Douglas Snow and illusionist Anthony Smith, Whipple perfected his craft. In the mid-1970s through the early 1980s, Whipple was the go-to artist and illustrator for dozens of Hollywood movie posters including, Star Trek I, Meteor, The Never-Ending Story, Dressed To Kill, Walking the Line, The Joint, Octagon, Heartbreaker and Final Countdown. His illustrations have appeared in over 80% of the magazines in the world. In 1984, Mohammed Ali asked Whipple to paint children of different races for his “Children’s Peace Journey” benefit. On Valentine’s Day that same year, Whipple had an art showing at the ARCO Plaza in downtown Los Angeles. The event drew record crowds and Whipple signed autographs for six straight hours. 18000 people saw the show of 16 paintings. Many waited in line over two hours. At the end of 1984, Michael Whipple changed his name to Sky Jones. In 1997, he stopped signing Sky Jones and in 2003, he started signing his art Siren Bliss. Today, the unassuming and reclusive artist’s original works are displayed coast to coast and in the collections of thousands of museums, charities, corporations and private collections. Whipple’s persistence of principles and standards has placed his art and genius as a beacon in the service of humanity.

"Eruption" - Large Scale Color Field Abstract
By Kristina Quinones
Located in Soquel, CA
Wonderful large scale abstract painting on canvas on wood panel titled "Eruption", painting is wrapped around the edges. Has a hard high gloss finish. Signed on verso "Kristina Quinones '06." Image, 60"L x 48"H x 2.75"D. "My work challenges the boundary between control and uncertainty. The grounding I feel through my work is an expression of the space that exists between these two phenomena. I mix my color and pour my paint, unsure of the outcome. I pick up the panel and start to dance with the movement of the paint as it slides from one side to the next. As the layers of color accumulate on each painting, the opportunity to manipulate the space between control and uncertainty diminishes. A sense of urgency arises, which is expressed in the textured movement of color. Paradoxically, as the process unfolds, my desire to control dissipates, and I am left with the ambiguous feeling of uncertainty. This cycle is repeated endlessly, incessantly, as if my will alone could leave its imprint. Whereas in the past this ambiguity would disturb me, I now find the process reassuring. It is clear that, despite my best intentions, each piece will choose its own path." Kristina Quinones was born and raised in Connecticut. Received her bachelor's degree in Printmaking from the University of Connecticut in 2001 then moved to California. In 2005 she received her Masters of Fine Arts in Printmaking from the San Francisco Art Institute. Quinones has exhibited in group shows throughout the United States. Recently Quinones was awarded the Affiliate Program...

"Curl Curl Beach Hills" Colorful Contemporary Mixed Media Painting on Canvas
By Antoinette Ferwerda
Located in New York, NY
This painting by Antoinette is a stylish and luxurious mixed media on canvas piece depicting abstract hills shapes with bold use of color and contrast. The dark denim blue background and the azure blue from the ocean allows for the luminosity to shine through effortlessly, as the lines and intricate details of the silk paper laid over paint and mixed media add a most interesting texture. The artist's hand embellishes gold leaf to add elegant accents. This painting comes housed in a natural oak floater frame with hanging wire on verso ready to be displayed. Art measures 47 x 47 inches Frame measures 48.5 x 48.5 inches Antoinette Ferwerda is a renowned Australian artist largely recognized for producing a bold collection of fine artwork that joyfully explores the geometry of shape and the changing light from dusk to dawn. Championing her love for shape, reflection, and nature using a diverse pallet of mixed media to portray her abstract interpretations of nature. Antoinette's diverse past and a childhood that was somewhat nomadic has inspired much of her work today. Antoinette’s backstory reads like something out of an adventure series, having spent her early days living in remote pockets of Papua New Guinea, where she was lucky to spend time in a seaside shack on Ela Beach in Port Moresby, as well as the volcanic town of Rabaul, the Cargo Port Lae, before moving on to Darwin where her Dad worked for the Red Cross and helped with the re-build process after Cyclone Tracy. This was followed by a family stint in Europe, visiting Netherlands, London, Belgium, France, Italy, and Switzerland, before finally settling back in Melbourne for her formative years. Her love for nature and exploring the patterns and relationships she finds within started early. “I’ve been forever fascinated with color and the magical interplay of light”. “Blessed to have a teacher Mum who fostered regular creative time during our nomadic stint, my childhood was largely spent creating, especially outdoors”. Never without a pen, sketchbook or scraps of paper, her natural ability to create in layers instinctively started in these early years. Although her work continues to evolve, she consistently creates works that are rich in layers, resulting in pieces that are optimistic, luminous and full of stories from her colorful life. Her signature work is abundant with color and texture, resulting in a transparent quality of her works. Adaptable to any palette, Antoinette has produced works from a diversity of spectrums and mediums – sun-soaked, muted and ethereal, vibrant, as well as monochromatic with accents of gold. Her themes include abstract and metaphysical interpretations of fossicking in rock pools, exploring the rolling hills of the countryside both here and abroad, the rock formations of the Australian outback and the magical light of a European summer to name just a few. Her dream and longing to become an artist became a reality after starting her own family and farewelling a corporate life in the pharmaceutical industry, with her debut solo exhibition in 2014. Six years on, Antoinette has fast become a firm favorite amongst interior designers, stylists and home decorators alike, having been represented by fenton&fenton, Thom Gallery and Trit House (formally Click On Furniture) to name just a few. Continually experimenting and evolving as an artist, Antoinette invites the viewer to look deeper through surface layers to find hidden stories of color and form. Past collections have been inspired by visits to the bustling markets of India, the morning light outside her childhood beach shack...
