Sorry if I duplicate any previous post. My object is to get all early wiring diagrams in one place. Please feel free to make additions.

All diagrams are from Norton publications.

Wire color codes:

B - black
U - blue
N - brown
G - green
K - pink
P - purple
R - red
S - slate
W - white
Y - yellow

Hello these wiring diagrams are wrong has they have the wrong switches in then Norton Manxman uses SA41 light switch early model 7 and model 88 form 1952 on use the 6 pin U39 slight switch but the Diagram's all show a 7 pin light switch witch is wrong , some one need to sort this so owners can make sence of it

You might note that the wiring diagram posted for the Model 88 is labeled "1964", thus your comment regarding the Model 88 may be correct for pre-'64.

I invite you or anyone else, who has alternate wiring diagrams to post them here. Citing the source would be helpful to those who are trying to make sense of it.

You guys must have better eyesight than me - even with a magnifying glass I can barely read most of that stuff.

Sorry Tex, but they need to be bigger, so they can be printed out. ?
And displayed as a URL, so you don't get them all crowding the page when you only need one.

Anna, there is indeed no Model 7 diagram there.
It has negative earth for starters,
and a very basic headlamp switch...

wiring diagram for Norton Manxman 650 is the wrong one its the earlier diagram named has 650 American

Hello the Last diagram is wrong the Norton Manxman Has the Lucas SA 41 lighting switch, And Not the Lucas SA 88 as in this diagram
 
Could it be because the publication P106/P was for British or UK/Europe models and as the Norton Manxman 650 & 650 American were, I think, all sent to the USA so they are not in there?

i.e. the American wiring harness has the headlight ON when ignition is switched on.

I think that would've been jumping the gun by a good ten years as I don't think it became law in the US until the early '70s. 'Headlamp on with ignition' wasn't until 1979.
 
I don’t dispute this but even some early WOP and Jap bikes from the 1960s had different switches to the ones sent to the USA.

Then logically it should apply to later Nortons but doesn't. The nearest thing would be the 850 Mk3 with the Canadian warning light unit but that is still not 'lights on with ignition'.
 
Just to dig up an older thread. I have a 63 Atlas (these were 6v and a few other minor differences) does anyone know if it's the same wiring as the the 64 12v atlas with 1 less battery? Or the 650ss 6v.

Also, I have never been bale to figure out the switch diagram (rocker style on the left) on the 650ss/650 america, anyone shed light?

My Atlas, a 62 build titled as 63, has the same wiring as that for 500, 650SS, 650 American (The 7th diagram from top). The 64 Atlas with 12 v included a Zener, so it was different. The 64 may have used the rotary, not rocker, switch.

The rocker type switch function, besides switching lights from OFF to PILOT to MAIN, switched the alternator GY lead wire as follows:

OFF: GY connected to alternator WG (ground lead). This provided minimum alternator output.

PILOT: GY open circuit. This provided about 2/3 alternator output.

MAIN: GY connected to GB. This provided full alternator output.

Edit: FWIW, this wiring had the serious flaw that the battery could overcharge, spilling battery acid over the left silencer. I recommend you install a modern regulator/rectifier, rather than strictly adhere to the wiring diagram. PM me if you need assistance.

Is there an error in the wiring diagram for the switch. Shouldn't the little pointer from the middle (pointing at 5 in all three diagrams) be pointing at 3(off),4(pilot) 5(full on)?

There certainly is something wrong or incomplete with the diagram! The pointer at 3 (off) will not make the pilot or main lighting function simply by rotating. There has to be something internal going on.

I have the original paper diagrams, so it is easy for me, but you can follow if you display the diagrams on a large monitor.

First of all, there is an error in wire color code in the 500, 650 SS, 650 American. The wire coming off the rectifier labelled NP (the V minus DC) connects to terminal 3 on the switch, which also has a wire labelled NW. This is a draftsman's error! Both wires connected at a common point should carry the same color code. If you look at the wiring diagram for Atlas 750, 650 Manxman, etc, the V minus DC wire is labelled NW. Therefore I conclude the NP wire code is an error, and should be NW.

Next, if you study the 750 Atlas, etc diagram, it is very similar to the 650 American except for the switch and zener diode. I surmise the internal function of the rocker and roller switch must be similar to the rotary type.

Studying the rotary switch:

OFF Position: NW (V minus DC) connects to terminal 2, then internally to terminal 10, then via wire NW to ammeter and battery.

PILOT Position: Terminal 8 connects to terminal 10, and terminal 2 connects to terminal 1. This powers up tail and pilot lights.

MAIN Position: Terminal 2 connects to terminal 3, and terminal 10 connects to terminal 11. This powers up main light, tail, and speedo illumination.

Transferring the above information to the rocker/roller switch, I surmise:

OFF Position: NW wire connects to Terminal 3 and goes directly to ammeter and battery. Internal to switch, Terminal 3 must not connect to anything else.

PILOT Position: Terminal 4 connects to Pilot light. This must be internally connected to Terminal 3.

MAIN Position: Speedo and tail light, wire NG, is connected to Terminal 5. Main lighting, wire U is connected to Terminal 2. Both Terminals 5 and 2 must be internally connected to Terminal 3.

My original rocker/roller switch crapped out from vibration many years ago, so I cannot verify any of the above. If you have a functioning switch in hand, perhaps you can verify.

the wiring diagrams for 650 American and 650 Manxman are the wrong way around then Manxman wiring Diagram should be where the 650 American diagram is, as the diagram of the Manxman that is showing using the as88 lighting switch witch was not use on Norton big twins until it was phased out by late 1963, The early Norton Manxman 650s used the Sa 41 lighting switch and that diagram as the same as 500ss and 650ss Manxman 650 all magneto ignition and 6 volts back then the 650 American was a Plumstead creation for 64 -65 export with black frame and 3 gallons tanks in red and only a batch of 60 ever made, but these did not sell well as American buyers where buying the bigger 750s buy then

It was fairly common for the 6volt system to be converted to 12 volt using the same alternator, with additional 6 v battery and zender.
